Senior Probation Officer

This is a permanent, full-time hybrid role with a salary of £46,746 - £48,760 per year. Location: Darlington, Durham, Newton Aycliffe, Peterlee. Closing date: 21-May-2026.

Job Description

This is a management role within the [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal]. The Senior Probation Officer supports the Head of Operational Function to provide management and leadership within a Local Delivery Unit (LDU) or other operational unit.

Responsibilities, Activities & Duties

  • Provide effective management and leadership to the team
  • Accountable for quality delivery of good practice and team performance improvement within policy and national standards
  • Ensure all team resources are deployed cost effectively and provide best value
  • Ensure staff meet requirements of [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] contract with [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] and Community Rehabilitation Companies
  • Access, interpret, analyse and apply performance data to maximise LDU/team performance
  • Proactively manage staff development, underperformance, attendance, health and safety, employee relations and diversity
  • Ensure offender managers manage risk appropriately and meet public protection standards
  • Contribute to public protection through multi-agency arrangements and casework review
  • Promote innovation and continuous improvement
  • Manage financial resources as required by Head of Operational Function
  • Provide leadership and direction in work with partners and stakeholders
  • Facilitate effective communication between LDU/Operational Unit management and partners
  • Play an active part in corporate management as a member of the LDU/Operational Unit Management Team
  • Undertake specific responsibilities delegated by Head of Operational Function
  • Demonstrate pro-social modelling skills

Essential Experience

  • Substantial experience in offender risk assessment and management as a Probation Officer or from criminal justice agency
  • Understanding of the role of the Probation Service in the Criminal Justice System
  • Knowledge of factors influencing engagement with victims
  • Experience of risk management and assessment, multi-agency risk assessment procedures
  • Evidence of ability to evaluate practice
  • Experience of working under pressure and fulfilling deadlines
  • Experience of working flexibly as a team member to achieve performance targets
  • Experience of contributing to effective administration and information systems
  • Demonstrable achievements in managing change and improving quality/efficiency
  • Well-developed IT skills including interpretation of performance reports
  • Experience of championing diversity and inclusiveness
  • Ability to implement health and safety policies

Technical Requirements

Probation Qualification Framework Graduate Diploma/Honours Degree in Community Justice integrated with Level 5 Diploma in Probation Practice, or equivalent recognised qualification.
