NI Engineering Graduate (Electrical)

[Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] is seeking an Engineering Graduate (Electrical) for a 2-year fixed-term development programme. This site-based role is located at Kilroot and Ballylumford Power Stations in Northern Ireland.

Role Overview

You will work alongside experienced engineers supporting outages, plant improvements, and reliability-focused projects across both sites. This is a hands-on, site-based role, requiring a strong presence on plant and close collaboration with operations, maintenance, and contractors. You will gain direct exposure to high-voltage systems up to 275kV, complex plant systems, and real-time operational challenges within a flexible generation environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supporting the preparation and execution of work scopes for planned and unplanned outages.
  • Assisting in the delivery of electrical engineering improvement projects.
  • Managing defined work packages under supervision, including coordination of contractors.
  • Developing and maintaining criticality assessments for electrical and plant systems.
  • Reviewing spares strategies, considering obsolescence and lifecycle management.
  • Supporting compliance with statutory and internal requirements (e.g. DSEAR, MOC, engineering standards).
  • Assisting with fault finding, investigations and root cause analysis.
  • Supporting testing, commissioning, and return-to-service activities on electrical systems.

Development Opportunities

  • Electrical systems within a large thermal power generation plant.
  • Exposure to high-voltage infrastructure (up to 275kV substations).
  • Outage planning and execution.
  • Plant reliability and RCM-based maintenance strategies.
  • Distributed Control System (DCS) logic and plant control philosophies.
  • Data analysis and performance monitoring.
  • Contractor management and site-based project delivery.
  • Technical investigations and process safety.
  • Building experience towards professional accreditation (IET/Chartered status).

Skills, Knowledge and Expertise

This development programme is designed for early-career graduates.

  • Background: Strong interest in power systems, high-voltage engineering, and plant operations - essential. Willingness to work on-site across Kilroot and Ballylumford. Full UK driving licence (or working towards). Basic understanding of power generation or industrial electrical systems - desirable. Placement or academic project experience in a relevant field - desirable.
  • Behaviours: Displays logical and structured approach to problem solving. Willingness to take a flexible approach. Effective communication skills and ability to work within a team. Strong work ethic with willingness to learn in a hands-on environment. Proactive attitude with willingness to take ownership of tasks.
  • Qualifications: Honours Degree (or expected by Summer 2026) in Electrical Engineering or closely related discipline - essential.
