BHF Data Science Centre Early Career Health Data Scientist

Job Description

The post holder will be a key member of the BHF Data Science Centre team, working on thematic areas and catalysts. They will provide data management and curation support to prepare analysis-ready datasets from linked national health data (hospital, primary care, mortality, COVID-19 test data, vaccination data, audit/registry datasets). Responsibilities include developing reusable curation pipelines, performing data quality checks, and undertaking statistical analyses.

Main Responsibilities

  • Data management and curation in secure data environments (SDEs/TREs) to create analysis-ready datasets.
  • Develop expertise in data quality and utility across UK devolved nations.
  • Summarise and disseminate findings to inform research.
  • Write and curate support documentation (data dictionaries, variable mapping, Git repositories).
  • Carry out technical validation checks on linked data.
  • Apply phenotype definitions and algorithms to linked health data.
  • Prepare numerical and graphical summaries for researchers.
  • Contribute to open-source, transparent, reproducible research.

Required Knowledge, Skills and Experience

Experience: Good first degree and higher degree or equivalent in bioinformatics, biostatistics, computer science, mathematics, statistics, data science, informatics, or epidemiology. Scripting skills in SQL, Python/PySpark; statistical software (R, Stata). Experience with health-related longitudinal data and data preparation. Understanding of information governance and NHS health records.

Skills: Commitment to open source, reproducible research; attention to detail; excellent networking and communication skills; ability to work independently and in teams; report writing and presentation skills; organisational skills.
