BHF Data Science Centre – Associate Director: Kidney Data Science Catalyst

This part-time secondment role (approx. 1 day/week for 3 years) involves leading strategic planning and stakeholder engagement to advance large-scale health data research in kidney disease, working with the [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] and [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal].

  • Type of contract: Approx. 1 day/week for 3 years
  • Location: Primary base could be anywhere in the UK, but must be willing and able to travel to London and elsewhere

Purpose of the post

We are looking for a leader who is well connected across kidney and cardiovascular clinical and research communities, with a track record in large-scale multimodal data types in kidney and cardiovascular research. The Associate Director will work with stakeholders to identify research priorities, forge collaborations, and address infrastructure challenges for UK-wide health data linkage.

Main responsibilities

  • Provide leadership to bring together communities and networks (patients, research, clinical societies, industry) to shape health data use for kidney research.
  • Create and maintain new partnerships across data science, kidney, cardiovascular communities, NHS, industry, patients and public.
  • Work with kidney, cardiovascular and health data science communities to identify exemplar driver projects.
  • Provide strategic direction and champion a team science approach.
  • Lead development of strategic plans, project plans and reporting for the Kidney Data Science Catalyst.
  • Contribute to funding applications to enhance research-enabling activities.
  • Communicate impact to diverse audiences.

Day-to-day project management and administrative support will be provided by the [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] team.

Eligibility: Candidates must hold a substantive post at a UK organisation, have a contract extending to 2027 or beyond, and have written support from their organisation.

Knowledge, skills and experience

Experience

  • Extensive experience in kidney research and understanding of health data science, especially linkage and analysis of population-wide health data.
  • Proven leadership skills to deliver change across the UK.
  • Advanced understanding of routinely collected health data complexities and devolved nation differences.
  • Experience linking health data with other data types (omics, wearables, imaging).
  • Knowledge of innovative methodological approaches (AI and/or machine learning).
  • Well connected with kidney and health data science research networks.
  • Experience working with patients and public involvement networks.
  • Commitment to bringing people together to improve systems.
