Business Analyst / User Interface Designer

Type: Full Time Role, 12-month Fixed Term Contract, with possibility of extension subject to funding

Location: Flexible. Primary base could be anywhere in the UK, but must be willing and able to travel to London and elsewhere (mainly UK) in connection with the role

Purpose of the post

[Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] requires the services of an experienced Business Analyst / User Interface Designer to work within its technology team, working on the Health Data Gateway and other software developed by [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal]. You will primarily but not exclusively be working to enhance the Gateway to support our brain health initiatives. These include NEURii, the Alzheimer’s Disease Data Initiative Data Pilots, Motor Neuron Disease (MND), Traumatic Brain injury hub and a collaboration between UK Dementia Research Institute (UK DRI), [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] and Medicines Discovery Catapult (MDC), the Dementia Trials Accelerator (DTA). The DTA initiative is funded by the MRC, NIHR and the Office for Life Sciences designed to enable the UK Government Dementia Mission, with a vision to rapidly position the UK as the destination of choice for investment and innovation in the delivery of clinical trials of new therapies for dementia, rapidly delivering significant patient and NHS benefits.

You will be part of a multidisciplinary team that will develop an over-arching interoperable infrastructure that seeks to bring together dementia related UK data assets and ensures they are Findable, Accessible, Interoperable and Reuseable (FAIR) and can support identification of relevant patient cohorts for participation in clinical trials. The successful candidate will be expected to work within an Agile software development team, providing user story and design leadership of key functionality and new concepts, primarily focused on the infrastructure and services. Objectives will include surfacing on a single pane of glass metadata from datasets collated from multiple partners and sources (metadata federation) in clear and concise fashion and facilitate the driving of cohort discovery requests across those partners to establish clinical cohorts for consideration by risk prediction engines submission to clinical trial platforms.

Main responsibilities

  • Build out of user stories and development of UI designs for a new Dementia Trials Accelerator Portal and wider Gateway working with key stakeholders and clinical trial specialists
  • Document user stories and end-to-end user journeys to provide simple and compelling user experiences, ensuring these are objective, succinct and documented
  • Co-ordinate internal and external workshops to gather requirements and build user stories
  • Collaborate with key Dementia Trial Accelerator partners and wider stakeholders to design the service
  • Validate designs with key partners
  • Collaborate with technical partners providing relevant services which need to be integrated, for example cohort discovery functionality
  • Collaborate with the [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] technology team that provides the underpinning technology and processes including the Gateway
  • Work across brain health initiatives and the broader technology team to drive synergy and coherence from a design perspective
  • Develop innovative and deployable continuous business intelligence, processes, and reporting to understand Portal usage
  • Involvement in the Quality Assurance (QA) / testing of code releases to ensure they meet requirements
  • Working to an Agile methodology, with fortnightly sprint deliveries

Team work expectations

  • Joint design work with Senior Technical Programme Manager, key partners and Developers
  • Working with the Technical Programme Director and Senior Technical Programme Manager as part of the leadership team
  • Participate in daily stand-ups and other sprint events
  • Strong collaboration with existing Technology team and working within its supporting infrastructure, processes and design methodology
  • Flexibility to contribute to other projects across the institute based on business need

Experience

  • Experience in a Business/Data Analyst role
  • Experience in a UI/UX Design role
  • Experience in working on complex projects with competing priorities
  • Experience communicating and managing multiple stakeholders
  • Experience using business intelligence tools for presentation such as Tableau
  • Experience planning and running design thinking workshop in-person and/or virtually
  • Passion for the user journey through infrastructure & services technologies
  • Experience of working within Healthcare, UK Public Sector, Academia, Life-Sciences, Clinical Trials or Research
  • Experience using Confluence, JIRA, Trello and similar Agile project management tools.

Skills

Essential

  • Ability to work accurately, with attention-to-detail
  • Excellent networking skills with a desire to work collaboratively to achieve goals; experience of working in multidisciplinary teams
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills with the ability to communicate effectively and confidently with people at all levels, including senior management
  • Experienced in building user stories and developing UI designs based on user requirements and feedback
  • Proficient in developing mock-ups and wireframes for user interfaces using tools such as Figma
  • Able to clearly communicate technical concepts to a non-technical audience
  • Experience of working in a fast-paced and evolving environment
  • Excellent negotiation skills with commitment and ability to bring together people and infrastructure to drive forward improvements/changes
  • Experience of working in an Agile / SCRUM team environment.

Desirable

  • An understanding of research delivery within the public sector, academia and/or industry.
