Key Responsibilities
- Safety First: Provide competent H&S advice and guidance across the business, helping teams understand and implement safe systems of work.
- Audit & Investigate: Conduct H&S audits, inspections and incident investigations, identifying root causes and supporting effective corrective and preventive actions.
- Mentor & Influence: Coach and guide employees at all levels to strengthen a positive safety culture and drive continual improvement.
- RAMS & Safe Systems: Undertake and review risk assessments, develop and review method statements, and support compliance to agreed controls and procedures.
- Incident & Data Management: Support investigation and reporting of incidents (including accidents, service strikes, and near misses) and maintain meaningful performance data and trends.
- Compliance & Legal Register: Contribute to compliance evaluations, support legal compliance processes, and help maintain a clear and effective legal register.
- Operational Collaboration: Work closely with contracts managers, supervisors and site teams to ensure H&S policies and procedures are applied consistently.
- Reporting: Support reporting of QHSE performance and emerging risks to the wider H&S team and management.
Skills, Knowledge and Expertise
Essential Qualifications
- NEBOSH Construction Certificate (minimum) (NEBOSH Diploma or equivalent strongly desirable).
Essential Experience
- Proven experience as a Health & Safety Advisor (or similar) within a highways, civil engineering, utilities, or street works environment.
- Strong practical experience managing H&S in environments involving underground services, including safe excavation controls, service avoidance, and service strike learning.
- Working experience and knowledge of CDM Regulations 2015, including Principal Contractor expectations and RAMS / planning interfaces.
- Working experience and understanding of Temporary Works, including recognising temporary works risks and engaging appropriately with delivery teams and temporary works roles (e.g., TWC/TWS).
- Demonstrable experience reviewing and improving RAMS, ensuring controls are suitable, proportionate, and followed on site.
- Experience conducting site inspections/audits and supporting incident investigations, including producing clear actions and tracking completion.
Knowledge & Competence
- Strong ability to provide clear, practical H&S advice in operational settings and influence positive behaviour.
- Confident communicating with supervisors, managers, and operatives—supportive, constructive, and able to challenge where needed.
Other Requirements
- Full UK driving licence (essential).
