The Role

We are seeking a skilled and motivated Music Technician to oversee the day‑to‑day operation of music studios, labs, and rehearsal rooms, providing high‑quality technical support to staff and students. The role supports music performance, production, and technology programmes, ensuring facilities and equipment are safe, industry‑standard, and fully operational, while contributing to a professional, inclusive, and creative learning environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • To oversee the operational running of the music studios, labs and rehearsal rooms.
  • To provide a day-to-day service to teaching staff and students.
  • To provide specialist technical support for the delivery of music performance, production, and technology programmes, ensuring equipment and software are fully operational and industry‑standard.
  • Maintain, service, and troubleshoot audio, recording, live sound, and digital music technology equipment, including studios, rehearsal rooms, PA systems, microphones, instruments, and backline.
  • Set up and de‑rig equipment for lessons, rehearsals, assessments, workshops, and performances, ensuring safe, efficient, and timely preparation of learning spaces.
  • Ensure compliance with health and safety requirements, including PAT testing schedules, completing risk assessments, safe working practices, and equipment inventories.

Qualifications

  • To hold a relevant Music qualification at Degree level or equivalent or be working towards.
  • Personal commitment to keeping your professional knowledge up to date and improving your capabilities.
  • Grade C or above in Maths and English (or equivalent) or willing to work towards it.
  • Industry recognised technical certifications such as Avid Certified Pro Tools Operator, Ableton Live, live sound engineering - Desirable.
  • Health and Safety training e.g. PAT testing, risk assessment.

Experience

  • Current knowledge and / or experience of one or more fields relevant to Music Production.
  • Experience working with music technology equipment, recording studios, live sound systems, and digital audio workstations.
  • Experience supporting others in using audio equipment or software, either in education, community, or industry settings.
  • Experience maintaining, troubleshooting, and repairing audio equipment and related technologies.
  • Experience working in an FE, HE or educational environment - desirable.
  • Experience supporting live events, performances, or studio sessions - desirable.
  • Experience managing equipment inventories, stock control, or procurement - desirable.

Knowledge & Skills

  • Strong technical knowledge of studio hardware, microphones, audio interfaces, PA systems, and backline equipment.
  • Proficiency with industry‑standard DAWs (e.g., Pro Tools, Ableton Live).
  • Ability to diagnose and resolve technical issues quickly and safely.
  • Understanding of health and safety requirements in music and technical environments.
  • Effective oral and written communication skills with the ability to support learners and collaborate with staff.
  • Strong time management and organisational skills, with the ability to manage multiple tasks and deadlines.
  • Evidence of disseminating own good practice effectively.
  • Suitable level of proficiency in ICT including the effective use of Microsoft Teams.
