Job Summary
Registered nurse working within a Critical Care unit individually and as a team, responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care to deliver a high standard of care. Who will need to maintain own professional development through ongoing education and development, ensuring that Critical Care competences are met together with all mandatory training.
Main Duties of the Job
PROFESSIONAL: As a registered nurse the post holder is personally accountable for their practice and must adhere to the NMC standards. Be an effective professional role model. Maintain own professional development through ongoing education and development. Adhere to Trust Policy on Scope of Professional Practice and sickness reporting policy.
CLINICAL: Undertake comprehensive and holistic assessment of patient's nursing care needs. Develop a plan of care, evidence based and planned in partnership with patient. Implement the planned program, delegating duties appropriately. Evaluate effectiveness of care. Maintain clinical records per NMC guidelines. Act as advocate for patients. Ensure multi-disciplinary care programs are implemented.

Job Responsibilities
CLINICAL: Ensure medicines are stored, supplied and administered in accordance with Trust Medicines Code and NMC Guidelines. Perform required clinical procedures. Respond to health emergencies. Competently use clinical equipment. Use IT Patient Information systems. Ensure appropriate communication with patients and relatives.
LEADERSHIP/MANAGEMENT: Allocate work to junior members. Ensure patients property is handled per Trust policy. Deal with untoward incidents. Contribute to audit. Attend ward meetings. Ensure ward environment is clean and welcoming.
EDUCATION AND PRACTICE DEVELOPMENT: Participate in appraisal. Support induction of new staff. Demonstrate and teach nursing procedures. Participate in clinical supervision. Act as mentor to nursing students. Assist in developing innovative clinical practices.
INVASIVE MONITORING: Preparation and institution of arterial and central flush systems. Care of catheters. Perform zero checks and obtain blood samples. Interpret pressure and cardiac tracings. Perform haemodynamic measurements. Titrate inotropic therapies. Manage multiple therapeutic infusions.
HAEMOFILTRATION: Establish renal haemofiltration therapy. Care for patients undergoing renal replacement. Modify regime per clinician directives. Troubleshoot equipment.
PATIENT TRANSFERS: Organise and co-ordinate transfer of critically ill patients. Transfer patients intra-site and inter-site. Care for paediatric admissions during stabilization.
CARE OF THE DYING PATIENT/ORGAN DONATION: Support patient/family and medical staff. Assist in brain stem death determination. Initiate and co-ordinate organ donation process.
ENDOSCOPY: Reprocess and prepare endoscopes. Perform safety checks.
OUTREACH: Provide/co-ordinate outreach service/advice. Participate in pre-operative preparation of patients undergoing major surgery.
PAEDIATRICS: Liaise with multidisciplinary team for paediatric admissions. Assess and implement plan of care. Assist anaesthetist with complex procedures. Use paediatric drug formulas. Lend emotional support.
Person Specification
Essential: Registered Nurse (Level 1). Ability to maintain own professional development. Ability to plan, assess, evaluate and implement patient care.
Desirable: Appropriate critical care module or willingness to work towards. 6 months post registration experience desirable but not essential. Has step one competencies. Knowledge of patient admin IT systems.
