FULL DESCRIPTION

GP Assistant

[Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] Group is seeking a GP Assistant to join their team in Ellesmere and Whitchurch, Shropshire. This permanent role offers full-time or part-time hours (minimum 28 per week) with a starting salary of £12.80 per hour. The closing date is 21 May 2026.

Main Duties

  • Prepare patients before GP consultations (brief history, basic observations)
  • Carry out routine clinical tasks (urinalysis, blood pressure, ECGs, phlebotomy)
  • Explain procedures and support patients with appointments, referrals, and follow-ups
  • Manage and prioritise clinical correspondence; code and update patient records
  • Direct information to appropriate staff (e.g. pharmacist, nurse)
  • Complete non-clinical forms and assist with documentation for GP approval
  • Liaise with external services to support patient care and admissions
  • Assist with wound care, immunisations, and public health initiatives (e.g. flu clinics)
  • Maintain a clean and efficient working environment
  • Participate in appraisals and ongoing training

Job Responsibilities

The post is advertised by [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] Group but the successful applicant will be employed by North Shropshire Primary Care Network (PCN). The role will be predominantly based at [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] Group but may require working across other PCN member practices. Key responsibilities include clinical care, administration, communication, and health records management within a primary care setting.

Clinical & Patient Care

  • Prepare patients for consultations, including taking a brief history and basic observations
  • Undertake routine clinical tasks such as urinalysis, blood pressure measurement, ECGs, and phlebotomy
  • Support wound care and immunisations
  • Explain treatment procedures and help patients understand their care
  • Assist with public health initiatives, for example flu clinics

Administrative & Coordination

  • Manage and prioritise clinical correspondence for GP review and action
  • Code and update patient records based on clinical letters
  • Signpost correspondence to appropriate team members (e.g. pharmacist, nurse)
  • Arrange appointments, referrals, tests, and follow-ups
  • Complete non-opinion forms and prepare documentation for GP review
  • Liaise with external agencies to support patient care and admissions

Person Specification

Qualifications (Essential)

  • Healthcare qualification (level 3 or 4) or working towards gaining equivalent level
  • Phlebotomy certification
  • Vaccination certification

Qualifications (Desirable)

  • Experience of working in a primary care environment
  • Experience of working with the general public
  • Experience of working in a healthcare setting
  • Wound care/removal of sutures and staples
  • ECGs
  • Venepuncture
  • New patient medicals, including height, weight, BP, pulse
  • Chaperone procedure
  • Ability to record accurate notes
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral)
