Job summary
An opportunity has arisen for a permanent Band 7 Clinical Lead Speech and Language Therapist to work across our medium secure hospitals in Birmingham. We offer Monday to Friday working and flexible working requests are considered up to 37.5 hours.
Speech and Language Therapy play a crucial role in identifying and supporting the communication needs of individuals with mental health. Our hospitals provide assessment, treatment and rehabilitation for service users with mental health needs.
Working as part of a dedicated Speech and Language Therapy team in a dynamic environment, this post would suit an applicant who has a genuine interest in working with young people and adults who present with complex mental health and communication needs. As an integral member of the multidisciplinary team, you will work collaboratively alongside colleagues from Occupational Therapy, Psychology, Nursing, Medical and Education services.
The successful applicant will lead on the development of the Speech and Language Therapy service, supported by the Professional Lead Speech and Language Therapist.
Our hospital locations are The Tamarind Centre (B9 5PU), Reaside clinic (B45 9BE) and Hillis Lodge (B31 5HE) are secure units for men. Ardenleigh Hospital (B24 9SA) is a secure unit for under 18`s and women.

Main duties of the job
The successful applicant will demonstrate a range of skills including effective communication with both clients, good organisation and time management skills, self-awareness and reflection, compassion, commitment and inclusion.
The role will be varied and include transferable assessment skills, planning and implementing evidence-based practice, reviewing and evaluating therapy using therapy outcome measures, provide advice to other professionals regarding the management of clients with communication needs, modifying materials, attending and contributing to clinical team meetings, report writing and completing administrative/managerial tasks relevant to the role.
The successful candidate will initially enter a supportive probation period of six months. Flexible working options available.
The post holder must have a Speech and Language degree qualification and be registered with the HCPC. Membership to the Royal College of Speech and Language Therapist`s is desirable.

Person Specification
Essential
- A recognised professional degree qualification in Speech and Language Therapy
- Registered member of the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
- Masters degree (or working towards) in relevant field. Equivalent experience will be considered
- Experience in leading on service development and quality improvement
- Demonstrates knowledge of legislation, national standards and frameworks applicable to working in a mental health trust
- Demonstrates some or developing knowledge of how psychiatric conditions and/or dual diagnosis's impacts on the communication skills of clients.
- Specialist clinical skill and knowledge in the assessment and application of specialist assessments and interventions for communication
Desirable
- Experience of working within mental health, CAMHS, secure care or a learning disability environment.
- Has experience of working with a neurodiverse population
- Recognised post graduate qualification in dysphagia/ ADOS trained (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule)
- Experience of the supervision of students/completing NQP`s documentation
