Finance Manager

[Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] is seeking an experienced Finance Manager to lead the finance function, ensuring accurate reporting, strong controls, and support across the organisation. The role includes managing a small team, preparing management accounts, overseeing payroll, budgeting, and system improvements. Based in Southend, this full-time permanent position requires a qualified or part-qualified accountant (ACCA/CIMA/ACA) with strong financial and people management skills. The closing date is 21 May 2026.

Main Duties

As Finance Manager, you will lead the day-to-day running of the finance function, ensuring accurate reporting, strong financial controls, and excellent support to colleagues across the organisation.

  • Manage and develop a small, dedicated finance team, including our Payroll Officer
  • Take ownership of monthly management accounts, reporting, and controls
  • Support budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning
  • Work closely with the Head of Finance and deputise where required
  • Play a key role in improving systems, processes, and ways of working

This role requires a flexible, hands-on approach -- someone who is equally comfortable reviewing reports and stepping in to support operational finance tasks when needed.

About You

  • Qualified or part-qualified accountant (ACCA, CIMA, ACA) or equivalent
  • Experience producing management accounts and financial analysis
  • Experience managing or overseeing payroll
  • Strong people management skills
  • Proactive, adaptable, and willing to roll up sleeves
  • Can communicate financial information clearly to non-finance colleagues

Job Responsibilities

Prepare timely and accurate monthly management accounts, including income and expenditure, balance sheet, and supporting schedules. Provide clear variance analysis and commentary. Lead month-end processes. Maintain fixed asset register. Monitor cash flow. Oversee transactional finance processes (AP/AR). Line manage Payroll Officer. Support VAT returns, year-end accounts, audit, budgeting, and forecasting. Contribute to improvements in finance systems (including Sage). Manage finance team members.

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Essential: AAT qualified, or part-qualified accountant (ACCA/CIMA or equivalent); GCSE or equivalent pass grades in Mathematics and English.
  • Desirable: University degree

Skills & Experience

  • Essential: Experience in finance/accounting role; proficiency in SAGE or similar; Microsoft Office intermediate; attention to detail; excellent communication.
  • Desirable: Familiarity with donor platforms (Raiser's Edge); understanding of fund accounting and charity SORP.
