Job Summary
Are you a passionate and forward-thinking nurse looking to make a real difference to children and young people living with diabetes? Our paediatric diabetes service is growing from strength to strength, driven by a supportive and ambitious multidisciplinary team. We are looking for a dynamic, motivated individual to join us as a Senior Paediatric Diabetes Specialist Nurse. You will play a key role within our dedicated MDT, bringing fresh ideas and enthusiasm to support continued service development and high-quality patient care.
Main Duties of the Job
- Take the leading role in advanced assessment, treatment, and management of children with diabetes in inpatient and outpatient settings.
- Act as a clinical lead for the paediatric diabetes services.
- Review and educate all children and young people (CYP).
- Develop comprehensive care plans for CYP.
- Provide advanced information, education, advice, and support to CYP, parents, ward staff, and schools.
- Lead on a designated clinic and independently manage a caseload of CYPs.
- Use excellent communication skills.
- Demonstrate advanced knowledge and clinical skills in managing CYP with diabetes.
- Work autonomously and as part of the nursing team/MDT.
- Support and teach ward staff, families, and other professionals.
- Lead quality improvement projects involving audits.
- Manage junior staff.
- Hold strong leadership and management skills.

Person Specification
Qualifications
Essential:
- Registered Child branch or Registered Sick Children's Nurse (RSCN).
- Recognised Post graduate Paediatric Diabetes Qualification.
- Independent Non-Medical Prescribing qualification (Active on NMC register) or willingness to undertake.
- Teaching qualification or equivalent, willingness to undertake, or equivalent experience.
Desirable:
- Educated to MSc Degree level in Paediatric diabetes.
- Leadership development programme or willingness to undertake.
- Advanced Communication Skills Training.
- Completed / completing a Master's pathway.
Experience
Essential:
- Significant demonstrable experience within paediatric diabetes care with evidence of professional development.
- Previous experience of formal / informal teaching of CYP's & staff.
- Experience in managing paediatric diabetes CYP's in hospital and community settings.
- Evidence of developing policy, guidelines and managing resources.
- Previous practice development experience.
Desirable:
- Previous experience in audit and evaluation.
- Experience in acting as a clinical supervisor and mentor.
- Extensive diabetes experience.
- Experience of providing support via an on-call service during evenings and weekends.
Skills
Essential:
- Direct care skills in hospital and community settings (insulin dose adjustment, able to lead on pump starts and CGM starts, history taking, assessment, treatment and evaluation).
- Advanced clinical assessment skills and ability to make autonomous clinical decisions.
- Coaching and mentoring skills.
- IT literate - keyboard and word processing skills.
- Completed band 7 PDSN competencies.
- Excellent communication skills.
Desirable:
- Understanding of health policy and national/local nursing agenda.
- Database management.
- Clinical audit.
- Application of management/leadership skills and autonomous practice.
Special Requirements
Essential: Ability to travel across different sites and within the community setting in a timely and efficient way.
