Job Summary

Registered nurse working within a Critical Care unit individually and as a team, responsible for assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care to deliver a high standard of care. Who will need to maintain own professional development through ongoing education and development, ensuring that Critical Care competences are met together with all mandatory training.

Main Duties of the Job

  • PROFESSIONAL: As a registered nurse the post holder is personally accountable for their practice and must adhere to the NMC standards.
  • Be an effective professional role model for staff.
  • Maintain own professional development through ongoing education and development, ensuring that PREP requirements are met together with all mandatory training.
  • Adhere to the Trust Policy on Scope of Professional Practice.
  • CLINICAL: Undertake comprehensive and holistic assessment of the patient's nursing care needs.
  • Use this assessment to develop a plan of care, which is evidence based and planned in partnership with the patient.
  • Implement the planned program of care, delegating duties appropriately and teaching and coordinating other members of the healthcare team.
  • Evaluate the effectiveness of the nursing care provided and adjust the care plan as necessary.
  • Maintain clinical records in accordance with NMC 'Guidelines on Record Keeping' and Trust policies.
  • Provide statements as necessary, within required time frames.
  • Act as an advocate for patients.
  • Ensure that multi-disciplinary care programs as identified through ward rounds or multi-disciplinary meetings are implemented.

Job Responsibilities

CLINICAL: Ensure medicines are stored, supplied and administered in accordance with Trust Medicines Code and NMC Guidelines. Perform required clinical procedures competently. Respond to health emergencies. Competently use clinical equipment. Use IT Patient Information systems. Ensure appropriate communication with patients and relatives. Contribute to patient information leaflets.

LEADERSHIP/MANAGEMENT: Allocate work to junior staff. Ensure patients property handled in accordance with Trust policy. Deal with incidents and complaints. Contribute to audit. Ensure ward environment is clean and safe. Act as Link Nurse.

EDUCATION AND PRACTICE DEVELOPMENT: Participate in appraisal. Support induction of new staff. Demonstrate nursing procedures. Participate in clinical supervision. Act as mentor to students. Assist in developing innovative practices.

INVASIVE MONITORING: Preparation and institution of arterial and central lines. Care of catheters. Perform zero checks. Interpret pressure and cardiac tracings. Attach Lidco monitoring. Titrate inotropic therapies. Manage therapeutic infusions. Perform clinical skills such as ECG, venepuncture, cannulation, catheterisation.

HAEMOFILTRATION: Establish renal haemofiltration therapy. Care for patients on renal replacement therapy. Troubleshoot equipment.

PATIENT TRANSFERS: Organise and co-ordinate transfer of critically ill patients. Competently care for paediatric admissions.

CARE OF THE DYING PATIENT/ORGAN DONATION: Support patient/family and medical staff. Assist in brain stem death determination. Initiate and co-ordinate organ donation process.

ENDOSCOPY: Reprocessing and preparation of endoscopes.

OUTREACH: Provide outreach service/advice to other wards when needed.

Person Specification

Education

Essential: Registered Nurse Level 1, ability to plan, assess, evaluate and implement patient care.

Desirable: Ability to maintain own professional development, 6 months post registration experience, has step one competencies.

Clinical

Essential: Ability to plan, assess, evaluate and implement patient care.

Desirable: Knowledge of patient admin IT systems.
