Job Summary
The Senior House Officer (SHO) in Stroke will be an integral member of the Stroke and General Medicine team, primarily based at St Peter's Hospital. The post holder will deliver high-quality, patient-centred care across acute stroke services, including Hyper Acute Stroke Unit (HASU) and Acute Stroke Unit, while also contributing to the unselected acute medical take.
Main Duties of the Job
- Deliver high-quality care to patients within the Stroke service, including HASU and the rest of the ward.
- Participate in the acute General Medicine on-call rota, including out-of-hours and weekend cover
- Assess, diagnose, and manage acutely unwell patients, including those on the unselected medical take
- Provide both inpatient and outpatient clinical care in line with Trust standards
- Support the delivery of hyper-acute stroke treatments, including thrombolysis (lysis) services
- Work collaboratively with Stroke Nurses and the wider multidisciplinary team
- Maintain accurate, timely clinical documentation and patient records
- Engage in audit, quality improvement, and clinical governance activities
- Participate in teaching, training, and continuous professional development
- Comply with GMC standards and Trust policies, ensuring safe and ethical practice

Job Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive clinical care for patients with acute stroke and general medical conditions
- Undertake initial assessment, investigation, diagnosis, and ongoing management of patients
- Manage acutely unwell and deteriorating patients, escalating care appropriately
- Participate in thrombolysis (lysis) pathways and hyper-acute stroke care
- Contribute to ward rounds, MDT discussions, and discharge planning
- Deliver outpatient care and follow-up where required
- Participate in a full-shift rota covering the acute unselected medical take
- Provide ward cover during evenings, nights, and weekends
- Assess and manage emergency admissions under supervision
- Prioritise workload effectively in a high-pressure environment
- Engage with the JRCPTB IMT curriculum and work towards competency achievement
- Attend departmental teaching, training sessions, and education programmes
- Participate in appraisal and maintain a professional portfolio
- Work closely with allocated Educational and Clinical Supervisors
- Undertake study leave and training opportunities where appropriate
Person Specification
Qualifications
- Essential: MBBS or equivalent recognised medical qualification; MRCP (UK) Part 1 (or equivalent/EEA eligibility)
- Desirable: Additional academic qualifications (e.g. BSc, MSc, MD, PhD)
Experience
- Essential: Demonstrable experience in Stroke or General Internal Medicine; Substantial NHS Experience
