Job summary

Applications are invited for the above post at the Orthopaedic Trauma Department at the John Radcliffe Hospital, Headley Way, Headington, Oxford, OX3 9DU. Two posts are available. We require an Orthopaedic Trauma Consultant, with a proven track record of delivering orthopaedic trauma surgery in the major trauma centre setting at consultant level. The appointee will work as part of a dedicated orthopaedic trauma team in a Major Trauma Centre, serving a catchment population of 3 million with a substantial tertiary workload. This is integral to this appointment, and applicants will need to demonstrate fellowship level training in complex Orthopaedic trauma surgery. We are looking for an applicant who is a team player and has relevant experience in the management of complex trauma. The appointee will be expected to participate in the on-call rota and may be required to work on any other site as required by the [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] in the future.

Main duties of the job

The Oxford Trauma Service provides consultant-based care for the local population of Oxfordshire and Thames Valley Major Trauma Network. The new appointee will form part of a team, managing patients with musculoskeletal trauma. The appointee will have individual consultant responsibilities, but these will be performed within a team environment, which provides excellent opportunities for further personal and professional development. The new post holder will be treated equitably in this regard with respect to his/her consultant colleagues. The post is suitable for a fully trained orthopaedic surgeon, with relevant experience from the UK or abroad, who wishes to practice their skills in the management of musculoskeletal trauma. We are looking for an applicant who is a team player and has relevant experience in both the management of complex trauma and pelvic and acetabular fracture surgery. Teaching/Research: [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] is a teaching hospital Trust, and the post-holder will be required to participate in teaching students, training junior doctors and in clinical examinations. It is expected that this will be an integral part of everyday clinical activity. The post-holder's contribution to teaching, training and research will be included in the regular job plan review. The Orthopaedic Trauma unit is one of the most active units for clinical trials worldwide. It is expected that the post-holder will contribute to this activity.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential:

  • Full GMC with licence to practice
  • FRCS (Tr & Orth) or equivalent overseas qualification
  • CCT in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery; OR Registration on GMC Specialist Register in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery
  • ATLS Provider (Current)

Desirable:

  • Higher level degree (e.g. MD, PhD).
  • ATLS Instructor
  • Definitive Surgical Skills Course, European Trauma Course (ETS), or Military Operational Surgical Skills (MOST)

Experience

Essential:

  • Work experience - General training in Trauma & Orthopaedic Surgery
  • Work experience - 12 months Fellowship level training in orthopaedic trauma in a Major Trauma Centre
  • Level of responsibility - Proven evidence of ability to make decisions at consultant level and to manage complex clinical problems.

Desirable:

  • 18-24 months Consultant experience in Orthopaedic Trauma Surgery within a UK Major Trauma Centre
  • 12 months Fellowship level training in a relevant subspecialty to major trauma
