About This Job
Since launching the world’s first portable wood-pellet pizza oven in 2012, [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] has grown into an award-winning, multinational company with a product range loved by pizza makers all over the globe. Our mission has always been to design innovative products that spark joy in our customers.
Job Description
We are seeking a Product Design Engineer to join our world-class team. In this hands-on role, you will be in the engine room for our New Product Development (NPD), solving complex engineering problems across the design lifecycle; from initial product architecture to the mass production ramp. This is an on-site role, working a minimum of 4 days per week from our office in Broxburn, Scotland.
What You’ll Do
- Concept-to-Production Ownership: Drive the mechanical development of new products, translating Industrial Design (ID) intent into fully realised 3D CAD assemblies and technical specifications.
- Technical Architecture: Define product layouts that balance the Design Vision with mechanical constraints, ensuring internal components and mechanisms fit seamlessly within the design envelope.
- Design for Excellence (DfX): Ensure all designs are appropriate for part manufacture and assembly. You will optimise for cost-efficiency while ensuring mechanical robustness and quality are at the core of every part.
- Rapid Prototyping & Validation: Design and build high-fidelity prototypes using our workshop and test lab. You will develop and run rigorous test protocols to verify that your designs meet [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal]’s high-performance and safety standards.
- Tooling & Vendor Management: Collaborate closely with our Asia-Pacific manufacturing partners to oversee the transition to production. This includes reviewing ISIR reports, managing Engineering Builds and tool refinement and defining part quality.
- Production Implementation: Support the manufacturing team during Engineering and Pilot Builds, resolving technical bottlenecks on the production floor to ensure a successful mass-production ramp.
- Technical Documentation: Maintain precise engineering records, including detailed 2D drawings, BOMs, FMEAs and validation test reports to ensure full traceability.
Who You Are
- A Technical Maker: You have a solid grasp of mechanical engineering and love getting your hands dirty building and testing physical prototypes.
- Solution-Oriented: You don’t just identify constraints; you find the mechanical solutions that bridge the gap between a concept and a manufacturable product.
- Detail-Obsessed: You take pride in your CAD work and documentation, ensuring every tolerance is checked and every test result is captured.
- Collaborative: You thrive in an "open-door" design culture, working cross-functionally with Category Management, ID, Quality, Compliance and CPI and Test teams to keep projects moving at [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] speed.
What you’ll need to succeed
- Engineering Background: A degree in Mechanical, Product Design Engineering or relevant field.
- Professional Experience: previous experience in an engineering role, specifically focused on taking consumer products through the full NPD lifecycle.
- CAD Mastery: Proficiency in 3D CAD (SolidWorks preferred) with experience in complex surface modeling and assembly management.
- Manufacturing Knowledge: Demonstrated technical proficiency in sheet metal work, plastic injection molding, and assembly processes.
- Communication: The ability to communicate complex technical challenges and solutions clearly with overseas manufacturing partners.
Bonus Points
- Six Sigma or equivalent methodologies
- Solidworks CAD software and sheet metal tool add ins
- Electrical and/or mechatronics design experience
- Deep draw sheet metal pressing and plastic part design for manufacture
- Additive and subtractive manufacturing techniques and technologies
