Job Summary

We are delighted to be able to offer an opportunity for a highly motivated, ambitious individual to join our well integrated team. The post is for 1 year based at the tertiary Hepatology centre at the Freeman Hospital with a focus on clinical hepatology and research. This is a busy unit with an integrated medical and surgical and medical team comprising 10 hepatologists.

The post-holder will help deliver the research portfolio for the hepatology team. NUTH is one of the highest recruiting CRNs in England and our research interests encompass a wide range of observational and interventional Phase 2 and 3 trials across a broad range of areas within hepatology e.g. alcohol related liver disease, autoimmune liver disease, viral hepatitis, MASLD, hepatocellular carcinoma, portal hypertension and palliative care. The trials include inpatient and outpatient studies and some based in endoscopy. The post holder is expected to support with team with driving study recruitment and will be the lead fellow on a number of the interventional/CTIMP studies undertaking the day to day management including trial visits. Their role will also include facilitating identification of patients suitable for inpatient studies. There will be dedicated time in their job plan for trials work but also an expectation to be available to members of the research team if there are queries or issues between unscheduled visits.

Main Duties of the Job

  • Present data from research studies at National and International meetings
  • Participate in audit and clinical governance activity
  • Contribute to departmental meetings and ongoing professional development
  • Manage patients with liver disease as part of the inpatient and outpatient clinical service
  • Opportunities to gain experience in complex Hepatology and liver transplantation

The post is for one year in the first instance, extendable to 2 years by mutual agreement to work towards a higher degree (e.g. Doctor of Medicine).

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

  • Essential: Primary Medical Qualification, Full GMC registration at time of application
  • Desirable: Good clinical practice qualification

Clinical Skills and Knowledge

  • Essential: NHS experience (paid employment), ability to participate in delivering service with supervision, interest in liver disease, potential to undertake independent quality improvement projects or research, good history & examination skills, knows when to seek assistance
  • Desirable: Some experience of liver disease, some understanding of research methodology

Management and Administration Experience

  • Essential: Written evidence of satisfactory training to date (e.g. workplace assessments)

Teaching

  • Essential: Able to teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels and to non-medical staff

Clinical Governance, Audit and Research

  • Desirable: Some experience of audit projects
