Job Summary

We are looking for an enthusiastic and dedicated Sonographer to join our Non-Obstetric Ultrasound Imaging team at [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal]. The posts are based at Hammersmith Hospital and St Mary's Hospital, with no requirement to rotate between sites. As a Senior Sonographer (Band 7), you will join the Imaging Department within the [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal]. Operating as an independent practitioner, you will perform high-quality diagnostic ultrasound scans, formulate comprehensive clinical reports, and communicate critical results directly to clinicians.

Main Duties

  • Perform and report on a wide range of general and complex ultrasound examinations autonomously, maintaining a high diagnostic standard and professional accountability.
  • Act as a source of expertise for other clinicians, providing advice on future patient management, including further imaging and referrals.
  • Maintain exceptional standards of patient welfare and privacy, using tact and diplomacy to communicate distressing or unwelcome news.
  • Responsible for the training and mentoring of Radiology registrars, student sonographers, and other staff members at both undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
  • Take responsibility for the assigned area and deputise for the Modality Lead Sonographer when required, ensuring equipment is maintained and troubleshooting faults.
  • Clinically justify ultrasound requests and prioritise workloads based on clinical urgency and unpredictable patient demands.
  • Actively assist with departmental audits, research projects, and clinical governance programmes to ensure the service meets Trust and statutory regulations.
  • Maintain an up-to-date CPD portfolio and participate in annual IPR and PDP objectives.

Person Specification

Education

  • BSc Radiography or Diploma of the College of Radiographers (DCR).
  • Health Professions Council Registration if applicable.
  • PgDip Medical Ultrasound.
  • Evidence of CPD.

Experience

  • Experience of training staff and students.
  • Experience of working unsupervised.
  • Awareness of clinical governance issues in relation to patient care.
  • Knowledge of developments within the profession.

Skills

  • Ability to cope with work pressures and manage time effectively.
  • Ability to make prompt decisions based on knowledge, experience and circumstances.
  • Ability to work using own initiative but also to know when to seek assistance and guidance.
  • Keep all records up to date in a clear, accurate and concise manner on a day-to-day basis.
