Job Summary: Are you an experienced Senior Respiratory and Sleep Physiologist or Healthcare Scientist looking to take the next step in your career? This post provides the opportunity to undertake Higher Specialist Scientist Training (HSST), developing the competencies required for independent consultant-level practice. The successful candidate will deliver advanced clinical care under supervision, contribute to service leadership and development, and play an active role in education, research and clinical governance, preparing them for future appointment as a Consultant Clinical Scientist. Our multidisciplinary team of Healthcare Scientists, Physiologists, Practitioners, Assistants and Trainees delivers a wide range of routine and complex respiratory and sleep diagnostic and therapeutic services, including Physiologist/Scientist-led CPAP and Sleep Clinics, supporting a large and diverse patient population. We are looking for a self-motivated, highly organised individual with excellent communication skills and a positive, approachable manner, who is passionate about delivering high-quality patient care. The role involves flexible working across King's Mill Hospital, Newark Hospital, and our Community Diagnostic Centre at Mansfield Community Hospital.

Salary: £49,387 to £56,515 a year

Main duties of the job
- Deliver highly specialised respiratory and sleep investigations, including interpretation, reporting, and provision of clinical advice to support diagnosis and treatment
- Monitor patient conditions during and following treatment, contributing to high standards of patient care, including within Healthcare Scientist-led clinics
- Work autonomously under pressure, managing and prioritising your own workload while contributing effectively to the wider team
- Support service development and leadership activities
- Supervise, mentor, and support the development of junior physiologists, healthcare assistants, and administrative staff
- Play a key role in the education, training, and competency assessment of junior healthcare professionals.
You will also be responsible for the safe use and management of complex and expensive equipment, contributing to protocols, calibration, quality control, and staff training.

Full Commitment to completion of HSST and all training, development and skills required for this.
Knowledge
Essential
- Advanced knowledge of respiratory and sleep physiology and its clinical application.
- Developing independent clinical decision-making and problem-solving skills.
- Excellent communication skills with patients, carers, and multidisciplinary teams
- Ability to work effectively at an advanced level under supervision.
- Demonstrated leadership potential and commitment to service improvement
Desirable
- Experience leading or contributing to audit, research, or service development projects.
- Experience contributing to MDT leadership or clinical pathway development.
- Evidence of teaching or training healthcare professionals.
Qualifications
Essential
- MSc in Clinical Science (Respiratory & Sleep, Clinical Physiology, or related discipline).
- Registration with the Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) as a Clinical Scientist.
- Eligibility for acceptance onto, or working towards, Higher Specialist Scientist Training (HSST).
Desirable
- Substantial post-qualification experience in respiratory and/or sleep physiology.
- Experience performing and interpreting complex respiratory and sleep investigations.
- Experience supporting or managing advanced respiratory and sleep therapies
- Evidence of progression towards advanced or consultant-level clinical practice.
Experience
Essential
- Minimum of 12 months NHS experience post completion of STP program or substantial experience working as a registered scientist to meet eligibility for the HSST program
- Record of training at all levels
Desirable
- National Professional body (ARTP, AHCS) involvement

- Ability to perform a wide range of duties according to the Job Description
- Ability to meet the travel requirements of the training role and the clinical rotations.
