Patient Services Assistant

A vacancy for a Patient Services Assistant (cleaning) to join the busy Patient Services Department at QA Hospital.

Salary: £12.92 an hour

Contract: Permanent, Part-time

Location: Queen Alexandra Hospital, Southwick Hill Road, Portsmouth, Hampshire PO6 3LY

Main duties of the job

  • Responsible for cleaning floors, furniture, fixtures, fittings, glassware, and both high and low-level surfaces across clinical and non-clinical areas, ensuring all tasks are completed to required standards.
  • Perform daily cleans and planned routine scrubs on wards; carry out ad-hoc infection-control scrubs as directed following outbreaks (e.g., MRSA, diarrhoea and vomiting, hepatitis) to help minimise bed blocking.
  • Clean sanitary fixtures and fittings in patient and public areas on a daily basis.
  • Undertake high and low-level cleaning tasks, including spot-washing walls, dusting curtain tracks, radiators, and window ledges, and cleaning internal glass and doorframes as required.
  • Replace window and bed curtains as part of routine duties and following infection-control cleans.
  • Clean patient-related furniture such as bedframes, lockers, tables, and chairs to maintain a safe, hygienic environment.
  • Operate heavy mechanical cleaning equipment (for example, scrubbers, wet pickups, and buffers) to clean floors in wards, bathrooms, toilets, and corridors.
  • Clean theatres in accordance with departmental and Infection Control guidelines, including daily scrubbing of theatre floors, sinks, and adjacent corridors (both dirty and clean zones).

Job responsibilities

  • Operate equipment: tub/cylinder vacuum, scrubbing machine, carpet shampooer, floor mopping equipment, safety steps, scrubber/dryer machines, waste bins, steam cleaner machines.
  • Follow SOPs, complete stores request forms, timesheets, holiday sheets, sickness notes.
  • Report faulty equipment to Domestic Supervisor or Estates department.
  • Participate in audits and staff surveys.

Person Specification

Qualifications: No formal qualifications required – training provided. Excellent customer care skills and high standards of work essential.

Hours of work: Specify shift preference from advertised hours – consistent Monday to Friday.
