The Position

The Director of Data Engineering is responsible for leading the design, architecture, and development of the organization’s data platforms and infrastructure. This role will drive the strategy and execution of scalable, secure, and high-performing data solutions that enable analytics, reporting, and advanced data capabilities across the enterprise.

This leader will oversee data architecture, modeling, and engineering teams to ensure reliable, well-structured, and accessible data. Working closely with Data Governance, Analytics, Technology, and business stakeholders, this role plays a critical part in building a modern, Azure-based data ecosystem that supports growth, compliance, and data-driven decision-making.

Responsibilities Include

Data Engineering Strategy & Leadership

  • Define and execute the enterprise data engineering strategy aligned with business and technology objectives
  • Lead and develop high-performing data engineering teams, fostering a culture of innovation, accountability, and continuous improvement
  • Establish best practices for data architecture, data modeling, and pipeline development
  • Partner with executive leadership to prioritize data initiatives that drive business value

Data Architecture & Modeling

  • Lead the design and implementation of enterprise data architecture, including data lake, data warehouse, and/or lakehouse frameworks
  • Define and enforce data modeling standards (e.g., dimensional modeling, normalized models, semantic layers) to support scalable analytics and reporting
  • Oversee the creation and maintenance of logical and physical data models aligned with business requirements
  • Ensure data is structured for performance, usability, and consistency across reporting and analytics platforms
  • Partner with Data Governance to ensure alignment on metadata, lineage, and data definitions

Azure Data Platform & Engineering

  • Lead the design and optimization of cloud-based data architecture leveraging Azure Data Lake, Azure Synapse Analytics, Azure Data Factory, and related services
  • Drive modernization of legacy data systems into a cloud-based, Azure-first architecture
  • Ensure scalability, performance, and reliability of data platforms supporting enterprise analytics and operations
  • Collaborate with IT and security teams to ensure infrastructure meets performance and compliance standards

Data Pipeline Development & Integration

  • Oversee the development and maintenance of robust ETL/ELT pipelines integrating data from multiple sources (CRM, ERP, clinical systems, financial systems)
  • Ensure efficient data ingestion, transformation, and delivery for downstream analytics and reporting
  • Implement automation and orchestration to improve pipeline reliability and reduce manual processes
  • Support both batch and real-time data processing needs

Data Quality, Reliability & Performance

  • Partner with Data Governance to embed data quality controls within data pipelines and systems
  • Ensure data accuracy, consistency, and availability across platforms
  • Implement monitoring, alerting, and issue resolution processes to maintain high data reliability
  • Optimize performance of data queries, storage, and processing

Collaboration & Stakeholder Engagement

  • Partner with Analytics, BI, Finance, Clinical, Operations, and Commercial teams to understand data needs and deliver scalable solutions
  • Translate business requirements into well-architected technical solutions
  • Enable self-service analytics through clean, structured, and well-modeled data
  • Work closely with Data Governance to ensure alignment on standards and compliance

Security, Compliance & Cost Optimization

  • Ensure data security, privacy, and compliance with regulatory requirements (e.g., HIPAA)
  • Implement role-based access controls and data protection strategies
  • Optimize Azure resource usage to balance performance and cost efficiency
  • Support audit readiness and regulatory reporting requirements

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree required; advanced degree preferred (Computer Science, Data Engineering, Information Systems, or related field)
  • 10+ years of experience in data engineering, data architecture, or related roles, with progressive leadership experience
  • Strong experience designing data architecture and data models in enterprise environments
  • Hands-on experience with Azure data technologies (Azure Data Factory, Azure Synapse, Azure Data Lake, etc.)
  • Expertise in ETL/ELT development, data modeling, and large-scale data processing
  • Strong proficiency in SQL and experience with Python or similar programming languages
  • Experience building scalable data platforms in cloud environments
  • Experience in healthcare, specialty pharmacy, or other regulated industries preferred
  • Familiarity with modern data architecture concepts (data lake, warehouse, lakehouse, semantic layers)
