Job Description
Our client is a leading FMCG Distributor and we are delighted to assist them in their search for an experienced Transport planning professional as they look to recruit a Transport Planner at their site in Burnley on a Sunday to Thursday basis (10am – 7pm).
Reporting to the Transport Manager, you will be part of a transport office team of three, working alongside a Transport Administrator and Assistant Transport Manager to coordinate and supervise the day-to-day transport operation. Together, you will ensure routes are planned efficiently, drivers are effectively managed, and all legal and compliance standards are maintained.
You will be a key point of contact for drivers, customers, and internal departments, helping ensure a smooth and efficient delivery operation.
Key Accountabilities
- Plan and manage daily multi-drop delivery schedules
- Route vehicles efficiently to maximise fleet and driver utilisation
- Allocate and manage driver/vehicle resources effectively
- Monitor live delivery routes using tracking systems
- Manage day-to-day driver, route, and customer queries
- Resolve delivery issues quickly and professionally
- Ensure compliance with drivers’ hours regulations and digital tachograph requirements
- Maintain legal transport compliance across the operation
- Manage vehicle defect reporting and escalate maintenance issues
- Conduct driver debriefs and performance reviews
- Investigate accidents, incidents, disciplinary, and conduct matters where required
- Carry out return-to-work interviews and sickness reviews
- Monitor driver and route performance, identifying areas for improvement
- Ensure compliance with company policies, procedures, and health & safety standards
- Support the Transport Manager with wider operational and team management duties
Ideal Person
- Previous experience in transport planning, logistics coordination, or transport supervision
- Strong understanding of drivers’ hours, tachograph, and transport compliance legislation
- Proven ability to manage drivers and operational issues in a fast-paced environment
- Excellent geographical knowledge of the UK
- Strong organisational and problem-solving skills
- Excellent communication and leadership abilities
- Good IT skills including Microsoft Office 365
- Experience using transport/logistics systems such as Microlise, Cameramatics, Transend Routing Software, Tachomaster, CheckedSafe, and Sage HR advantageous
- Positive, proactive, and team-focused attitude
- Full UK driving licence essential
- Class 2 licence advantageous but not essential
