Role Overview

The Deputy Chief LX is a senior member of the Technical Team within the Manchester Palace Theatre. Your line manager is the Chief Electrician, and you are required to deputise for the Chief LX and manage a pool of casual technicians. You’ll work closely with the full-time technical team and other Heads of Department across both venues. The role will be based at the Palace Theatre, with occasional work at the Opera House (sister theatre). As a senior member, you will assist the Technical Manager in implementing and monitoring workplace safety and compliance, and support the Chief LX on maintenance of the venue’s electrical systems and equipment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Deputise for the Chief Electrician in their absence.
  • Ensure smooth running of fit ups, load outs and shows in line with health and safety legislation.
  • Safe and efficient operation and maintenance of all electrical equipment.
  • Maintain venue electrical systems and promptly address faults.
  • Service, maintain and install electrical materials in line with IEE Regulations.
  • Monitor outside contractors’ performance.
  • Obtain accurate quotations for work.
  • Complete regular inspections and PAT testing.
  • Carry out risk assessments and method statements.
  • Ensure compliance with entertainment licensing, fire, building and health & safety legislation.
  • Ensure only qualified personnel operate electrical equipment.
  • Ensure lamping and general lighting maintenance within agreed parameters.
  • Complete incident reports, near miss reports and accidents reports.

Operational Requirements

  • Work across both [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] Manchester venues to meet schedule and staffing needs.
  • Ensure sufficient scheduling of technical staff.
  • Work with visiting companies to meet technical needs economically and within contract.
  • Advise box office, marketing and front of house about seat removals.
  • Order materials in line with company procedures.
  • Observe UK Theatre / BECTU Code of Conduct.
  • Ensure visiting companies are aware of in-house agreements and cost implications.
  • Obtain written authorisation for additional equipment for recharge.

People Management

  • Lead the technical team in LX and Sound.
  • Recognise skill sets and promote multi-skilling.
  • Ensure accurate documentation (timesheets, holidays).
  • Process casual personnel changes and holidays.
  • Attend training courses for self-development.
  • Ensure all company policies are adhered to.
