Shipyard Mechanical Fitter, Gravesend

Love working with marine machinery? Join [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] and help keep vessels – ours and our customers’ – in top condition at our busy Gravesend shipyard.

Job description
[Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] is one of the UK’s leading waste management and recycling companies, operating one of the largest energy-from-waste facilities in the country. As part of our core operations, we run a thriving shipyard at Gravesend that supports both our own fleet and vessels from external customers. This is a dynamic environment where no two days are the same.

As a Shipyard Mechanical Fitter, you’ll play a vital role in ensuring vessels are maintained to the highest standards. From engines and marine systems to plant and workshop equipment, your work will keep operations running smoothly and safely. You’ll also help maintain compliance with health, safety, and environmental legislation, making sure the site remains secure and efficient.

This is a hands-on role that combines technical expertise with problem-solving. You’ll be involved in everything from mechanical servicing and repairs to operating workshop machinery and managing materials. Flexibility is key – while your base will be Gravesend, occasional work at Charlton may be required to meet business needs.

Joining [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] means becoming part of a team that values professionalism, inclusivity, and continuous improvement.

Job Requirements

  • Strong communication skills – written and verbal – and ability to document work clearly.
  • Analytical thinking and problem-solving essential.
  • Experience in material management and computer literacy.
  • Practical skills in operating workshop equipment such as turning, drilling, welding, soldering, and CNC machinery.
  • Adaptability – may involve working outside normal hours, in confined spaces, and at height.
  • Desirable: Diploma in Marine Construction, Mechanical Installation, or System Engineering and Maintenance; Certificates in Mechanical Engineering or ILM Level 2.
