Study Hall Supervisor
[Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] is hiring a Study Hall Supervisor to supervise pupils during independent study periods. This is a term-time, part-time role with hourly pay of £13.63-£14.29.
Job Purpose
The Study Hall Supervisor is responsible for providing structured, purposeful supervision for pupils during timetabled independent study periods. The role supports academic success by promoting high expectations, independent learning, and effective study habits, particularly in preparation for A Level assessments and progression to higher education, apprenticeships, or employment.
Contract Type and Hours
Term Time working schedule aligned to the school timetable. Hours: Monday to Friday from 9.05am to 3.15pm. Rate of pay: NJC Scale 1 Points 5-8 £13.6288 to £14.2897 per hour. Probationary period: first 26 weeks.
Duties and Responsibilities
- Supervise pupils during scheduled study sessions, ensuring a quiet, focused, and academically purposeful environment.
- Monitor attendance and punctuality in line with study requirements.
- Ensure pupils adhere to codes of conduct and study hall expectations.
- Address low level disruption promptly using appropriate behaviour management strategies.
- Refer concerns regarding attendance, behaviour, or engagement to the Sixth Form Team.
- Promote independent study skills appropriate for A Level pupils, including self discipline, organisation, and time management.
- Encourage effective use of study time for homework, coursework, revision, and exam preparation.
- Support pupils in planning workloads around assessments, coursework deadlines, and external examinations.
- Monitor appropriate and purposeful use of laptops, tablets, and mobile devices in line with school policy.
- Direct pupils to subject teachers, tutors, or academic support services when additional help is needed (without delivering subject teaching).
- Maintain a high level of vigilance to ensure pupil safety and wellbeing at all times.
- Recognise and report safeguarding or welfare concerns in accordance with school policies.
- Maintain professional boundaries while fostering respectful, supportive relationships with pupils.
- Uphold confidentiality and data protection requirements.
- Liaise with Heads of Year, subject teachers, and sixth form staff regarding pupil engagement and conduct.
- Maintain accurate records of attendance, incidents, and concerns.
- Contribute positively to the academic culture and ethos of the sixth form.
- Support whole school and sixth form specific policies and procedures.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- Strong supervisory and behaviour management skills appropriate to a sixth form environment.
- Clear communication skills and the ability to establish authority while treating students as young adults.
- Understanding of the academic demands of A Level study and independent learning expectations.
- Commitment to safeguarding and promoting pupil wellbeing.
Desirable Criteria
- Experience working with young people aged 16–18 or in a comparable post 16 or educational setting.
- Previous experience in a sixth form, college, or A Level support role.
- Familiarity with UCAS, A Level assessment structures, or post 16 progression pathways.
- Training in safeguarding, first aid, or student mentoring.
