Classroom Assistant
Reports to: Head teacher and SENCO | Hours: Up to 32 hours/week term time | Salary: £14.9917 per hour | Location: Northern Ireland (school-based) | Type: Part-time, On-site
Job Purpose
Under the direction of the SENCO and class teacher, assist with educational support and care of pupils with specific educational needs. Support teachers by preparing lessons, working with individuals/small groups, managing behaviour, providing emotional support, and supervising activities to ensure a safe, productive classroom environment.
Main Duties & Responsibilities
- Establish supportive relationships with SEN pupils and assist teaching/pastoral staff.
- Develop an understanding of specific pupil needs and provide appropriate praise and encouragement.
- Assist with development and delivery of personalised support programmes.
- Support pupils in classroom learning including ICT and general activities.
- Contribute to inclusion in mainstream school activities under SENCO direction.
- Carry out administrative tasks and maintain pupil progress records.
- Lead in improving provision for pupils with ADHD, Dyslexia, Dyspraxia, ASD, etc.
- Assist with off-site activities, administer first aid, and provide supervision.
Person Specification – Essential Criteria
Qualifications: Minimum 5 GCSEs at grade C or above including English and Maths. Experience: Working with children in a formal environment (school, nursery, playgroup). Skills: Microsoft Word, Outlook, and/or C2K schools IT systems.
Person Specification – Desirable Criteria
- NVQ 3 (or equivalent) in a relevant childcare qualification.
- Minimum 6 months’ experience in a working environment.
- 1+ years’ paid experience as a Classroom Assistant with SEN children within last 5 years.
- Qualified teacher status (GTCNI).
