Job Description
The [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] was established by Royal Decree in 1608 and is an academically selective voluntary grammar school for boys and girls aged 4–19 years. The school is situated approximately 40 miles South West of Belfast. There are at present 804 pupils of whom 70 are boarders. Boarding forms an essential and integral part of our school life and identity. The [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] Sixth Form Boarding offers an outstanding international pre-university educational experience to pupils aged 16+ from all around the world.
The Housemaster/Housemistress will primarily be responsible for running all aspects of the Senior Boarding House to secure a high quality of pastoral care, effective use of resources and improved standards of learning and achievement for all pupils. The post holder will manage the Sixth Form Boarding House, work as part of a team of residential staff, and report to the Headmaster through the Head of Boarding.
The post is a residential role. Accommodation consists of a private one-bed flat located in the Senior Boarding House. No charge is made for accommodation or meals during the school term. Weekday hours when on duty are from 3:15pm to 10:30pm Monday to Friday and 8:00am to 9:00am in the mornings, with one weekend on duty per month.
Responsibilities
- To share in all aspects of boarding life and ensure the safety, welfare and pastoral care of pupils.
- To ensure staff are familiar with safeguarding, anti-bullying, substance misuse, and health and safety policies.
- To gain respect and trust of pupils and support their academic and extracurricular activities.
- To plan and implement supervision structures, ensuring safety and security at all times.
- To arrange back-up cover and maintain constructive working relationships with boarding pupils.
- If undertaking teaching: to manage pupil learning through effective teaching, differentiation, and homework setting.
Person Specification
Essential Criteria
- A degree (or equivalent) OR experience of working with young people in a residential environment OR nationally recognised boarding qualification.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Current knowledge of approaches to promoting positive behaviour for learning.
- Commitment to boarding school life and safeguarding children.
- Evidence of leadership, organisational skills, effective communication, empathy, and flexibility.
Desirable Criteria
- Qualification meeting requirements for teaching in grant aided schools in Northern Ireland (GTCNI registered).
- Post Graduate Certificate in Education.
- Ability to teach to KS3 level.
- Sport or coaching qualification.
- Managerial and administrative experience leading a team of boarding staff.
