The position is based at New Cross Hospital in Wolverhampton with a salary of £49,387 - £56,515 per annum. The closing date is 21/05/2026.

Job Overview

A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a Deputy Finance Manager to join the Emergency and Medicine Division on a permanent basis. Reporting to the Clinical Finance Manager, the successful candidate will lead a Financial Management team to ensure effective use of financial resources in pursuit of agreed Divisional and Corporate goals. This post will also support budget setting, financial planning, forecasting, monthly monitoring and reporting within corporate standards and timetables. This role is based at New Cross Hospital while also embracing the option of agile working, through a combination of on-site working and working from home.

Main Duties of the Job

  • Provide financial support and advice to specified divisions and support services, including advising Clinical Directors, Divisional Managers, and Budget Holders.
  • Supervise a finance team providing professional advice on all financial matters.
  • Represent the Chief Financial Officer at Divisional/Departmental Team Meetings.
  • Ensure all decisions are made within a financial framework agreed by the Chief Financial Officer.
  • Support budget setting, financial planning, forecasting, monthly monitoring, and reporting.

Detailed Job Description and Main Responsibilities

The Deputy Finance Manager supervises a finance team responsible for financial advice, information, and input to clinical services. Key responsibilities include:

  • Ensure information provided by the team is of high professional standard, timely, and accurate.
  • Manage day-to-day team operations, including recruitment, appraisals, and personal development.
  • Lead the monthly management accounting process, ensuring correct accounting treatment and adherence to deadlines.
  • Meet regularly with divisional staff and budget holders to discuss financial position and corrective actions.
  • Advise on cost improvement targets, income generation, service developments, and business planning.
  • Support business cases for Trust Management Committee, Trust Board, Commissioners, and ICS.
  • Appraise the Finance Manager of risks to financial breakeven.
  • Support annual Trust business planning and budget setting.
  • Ensure awareness of Trust policies and procedures, and report non-compliance.
  • Contribute to Patient Level Costs/Reference Costs and other costing returns.
  • Lead team in accurate completion of Trust accounts processes.
  • Participate in departmental meetings and deputise for the Finance Manager as required.
  • Ensure continuous professional development (CPD) in line with accountancy professional bodies.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential: Qualified AAT with substantial post qualification NHS management accounting experience.

Desirable: Fully qualified CCAB Accountant or final stage of study.

Experience/Skills

Essential: Previous experience in a senior management accounts role, ability to lead business planning and budget setting, experience supervising staff, ability to work on own initiative, computer literate with advanced Excel, experience with computerised ledger packages, high level of analytical skills, ability to make decisions quickly.

Desirable: Previous NHS management accounts experience, experience in setting budgets for complex services, experience managing a finance team, ability to use VBA/SQL.

Essential: Keen to further professional development, understand importance of confidentiality, ability to communicate confidently, ability to manage multiple projects.
