[Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] is seeking a part-time Band 6 Ward Sister/Charge Nurse for the Surgical Assessment Unit at Pinderfields Hospital.
About the Role
An exciting part time opportunity has arisen on the Surgical Assessment Unit for 14 hours Band 6 Ward Sister. This post is for internal candidates. The successful candidate will be responsible for the coordination of the Assessment Unit which is a high flow, high acuity area for all surgical specialities. We have a 27 Bedded Unit and 5 Surgical Same Day Emergency Care side rooms. The unit cares for multiple specialities and has an average length of stay of 72 hours, caring for over 1000 patients a month. The role involves working clinically and coordinating the flow of surgical patients out of the Emergency Department and ensuring the safe flow of patients both in and out of the unit. The successful candidate will act as a role model and source of support to junior members of the team and welcome and support students to the area. The role will involve monitoring and maintaining high standards of care on the unit, acting in the unit managers absence and additional duties such as answering Radar forms, providing feedback and ensuring patient safety.
Main Duties
- Provide the coordination of the flow of patients in and out of the SAU, ensuring that patient safety is a priority at all times and clinical care is of the highest standard.
- Act in the Unit Managers absence and also support with delegated roles.
- Coordinate and support the staff on duty on each shift, attend and support multiple ward rounds ensuring high standards of care and timely discharges.
- Monitor and maintain high standards of care and complete audits which feed into the continuous improvement of the unit.
Essential Person Specification
Qualifications
- Registered Nurse
- NMC Registration
- Diploma level education (or equivalent)
- Evidence of ongoing professional development and willingness to undertake further development.
- Evidence of competency in teaching and assessing
Experience
- Significant & proven post registration experience in acute surgical setting
- Experience in education, & assessment and the facilitation of learning in others
- Demonstrate recent experience of management of change
Knowledge and Awareness
- Evidence of up to date nursing practice
- Knowledge of relevant government policies and modernisation agenda
Skills and Abilities

- Demonstrate innovation in practice
- Demonstrate a high level of personal and professional autonomy and an understanding of professional accountability
