Single-unit architecture of the human brain
Research opportunity for a postdoctoral clinical fellow in Andreas Schaefer’s lab.
The project
This is a postdoctoral project for a neurosurgeon to facilitate intracranial recordings in humans to describe the functional neural architecture in health and disease.
The Sensory Circuits and Neurotechnology laboratory studies encoding in neural circuits and develops technology for recording electrical signals from the brain. Leveraging medically indicated surgical access to the human brain, the group studies neural activity in patients, aiming to identify neural correlates of external stimuli or motor actions and internal states. Moreover, we propose that the description of neural activity on the single-cell level could provide electrical biomarkers for clinical conditions.
Building on ongoing projects in the lab, the focus of this post-doctoral project is to perform high-resolution neural recordings in humans in both normal and pathological brains to establish reference ranges for normal activity and characterise the changes seen when neural circuits are altered through damage or disease.
