Specialist Rehabilitation Engineer

This is a permanent, full-time Band 6 position (with potential B5 transition) offering £39,959-£48,117 per annum. The closing date is 10 May 2026.

Job summary

This post is situated within a specialist paediatric rehabilitation engineering service. The client group served have severe and complex physical disabilities and therefore require bespoke assistive technology (AT) solutions in order to undertake activities of daily living. We specialise in 24hr postural management including mobility seating, activity seating, standing supports, lying supports and other equipment of daily living. This role is for a B6 Register of Clinical Technologists (RCT) registered Rehabilitation Engineer, however, depending on applications received we will consider recruiting an experienced B5 Rehabilitation Engineer who is eligible and willing to complete the necessary steps to become registered. Previous experience as a B5 RE or equivalent is required so that you are ready to take an active role in the department while obtaining your RCT registration. If applying for the B5-6 position supported supervision will be provided. The route and timeline of registration will be agreed upon prior to starting. You will be required to complete all training activities within the allotted training time frame and progression to B6 will depend on successful RCT registration. Main duties of the job

  • Attend a range of specialist clinics on and off site as a part of a multidisciplinary team to assess clients and establish the AT requirements.
  • Design, develop and manufacture new equipment or adapt existing equipment to an agreed solution.
  • Be responsible for the technical aspects of the equipment produced and work within our Quality Management System.
  • Manage ongoing actions, write up technical plans and drawings, gather prescriptions and quotes from companies and apply for funding.
  • Manufacture your own and others designs using our workshop.
  • Keep track of all ongoing work and ensure it's completed in good time.
  • Be an active and engaged part of the RES team, involved in ongoing groups and projects, and provide a technical advisory role to junior staff and outside agencies as appropriate.

Job description / Job responsibilities

  • To attend solo or as part of an RES team appointments and clinics with users, carers, and staff of other disciplines/outside agencies to discuss problems experienced by clients and their carers for which assistive technology may provide a solution.
  • To design and develop and manufacture equipment or adapt/modify commercially available equipment to solve individual problems of daily living experienced by clients and their families and carers.
  • To work within our Quality Management System and understand what we are registered to do.
  • To take account of the medical, therapeutic, nursing and the clients personal requirements relevant to the assistive devices to be supplied.
  • To use sound engineering techniques and other appropriate practices to develop and produce the assistive devices required and to seek advice when in doubt.
  • To communicate effectively with management and all RES staff, therapists, clients, local services and contractors in a professional manner.
  • To effectively organise and complete own workload and be efficient in the use of time and materials.
  • Contribute to project files and product development, attend staff meetings and participate in delegated action plans for the department as agreed by management.
  • Work as an engaged and enthusiastic member of the RES team including supporting ongoing projects and assisting other members of staff.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential: HNC or higher in mechanical engineering (or equivalent engineer degree e.g. product design or rehabilitation engineering). Registered with the voluntary register of Clinical Technologists (for those applying for B5-6 transition this is not required). Desirable: Member of IPEM.

Experience

Essential: Working within a rehabilitation engineering department. Recent experience using a variety of engineering machinery such as mills, lathes, band saws, drills, saws, and welding. Problem solving using mechanical engineering techniques. Experience working as a B5 RE (or equivalent). Desirable: Working with children and young people, including those with complex conditions. Provision of a range of specialist assistive technology (e.g postural management equipment, daily living equipment, EAT).

Skills and Knowledge

Essential: Ability to communicate clearly and respectfully (verbally and in writing) with colleagues and clients. Ability to organise own workload and work to tight timescales. Ability to create and interpret engineering technical drawings. Ability to drive & clean driving licence. Skills to work as an effective team member. Desirable: Use of 3D CAD packages. Knowledge & understanding of quality systems.
