Further Information

Do you want to help shape the future of our historic outdoor markets? Are you a problem solver who can think on your feet? Do you like working in a fast-paced operational environment? Look no further! We have a fantastic opportunity for a Market Manager to join our team here at [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal].

[Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] Markets have been at the heart of our communities for more than 200 years. Now, with the launch of the Stockton Waterfront Urban Park in June 2026, our markets are stepping into an exciting new era - and we’re looking for an ambitious Markets Manager to lead the way. This is a rare opportunity to take charge of three vibrant town-centre markets (Stockton, Thornaby and Billingham) blending rich heritage with fresh ideas to create thriving, modern destinations that attract shoppers, visitors and businesses.

As Markets Manager, you’ll be a key leader in our town centre transformation. You’ll manage the day-to-day operation of the outdoor general markets, drive commercial performance and ensure the markets play a central role in regeneration, place-making and community life.

Working from the Our Markets Matter strategy, you will:

  • Grow income and improve occupancy
  • Attract, recruit and retain a diverse, high-quality mix of traders
  • Deliver safe, well-managed and welcoming markets
  • Deliver market specific events
  • Manage a diverse cohort of independent traders
  • Promote the markets as exciting destinations - including positive use of Facebook and Instagram
  • Ensure compliance with Market Regulation & Quality Standards (2026).

You’ll work closely with the Town Centre Manager, Assistant Town Centre Manager, traders, council services and external partners to boost footfall, enhance customer experience and strengthen the identity of each town centre.

The role as a market manager will require the successful candidate to work Saturdays as part of their working week. Please ensure that you can commit to this prior to applying.

For more detailed information about the role, please refer to the Job Description and Person Specification included in the Supporting Documents section.

[Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] prides itself on being a great place to work where staff are trusted, valued and supported to make a positive contribution at work.

We offer an excellent total reward package, including:

  • A competitive salary of up to £37,280
  • 27 days annual leave per year rising to 32 with 5 years service (plus bank holidays). Ability to purchase additional leave is also available.
  • Generous Pension Scheme through the LGPS with ability to pay extra and plan for retirement.
  • Access to a number of other employee benefits including learning & development opportunities, a car lease scheme, discounts at high street and online retailers, online GP appointments, an employee assistance programme and physiotherapy services.

And that’s not all – you can also work flexibly where you can work part of your week at home, if this fits with the requirement of the market operations.

Sponsorship will only be offered where there is clear, evidenced justification, such as significant recruitment difficulty or the need for specialist skills that cannot be met from the local labour market.

Limitations: Where an individual (prospective or existing employee) cannot demonstrate a valid right to work in the UK, and where visa sponsorship is not appropriate, justified or approved, the Council will be unable to progress or continue the appointment. This includes cases where an existing employee’s visa is due to expire and sponsorship is not granted.
