Choral Director

[Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] is seeking an inspirational Choral Director for the Schools Singing Programme. The role involves leading choral education in diocesan schools, with flexibility for full-time or part-time hours. Salary: £30,000 (pro-rata). Fixed-term contract until 2025.

About the Programme

The Southwark Singing Programme is part of the National Schools Singing Programme, founded by the Hamish Ogston Foundation. It operates in nine schools across Southwark, Lambeth, Greenwich, and Lewisham, with plans to expand into South London and Kent. The programme focuses on areas of economic deprivation and aims to provide inspirational choral education.

Role Responsibilities

  • Deliver weekly whole-class singing sessions in diocesan primary and secondary schools, working from the keyboard.
  • Identify, recruit, and maintain relationships with schools for the Singing Programme.
  • Liaise with diocesan staff and schools to implement Service Level Agreements.
  • Foster links between schools and parishes, including opportunities for after-school choirs and Sunday masses.
  • Support cathedral and diocesan choirs, assisting in rehearsals and deputising for the Director of Music.
  • Additional work as deputy lay clerk, cantor, accompanist, or organist may be available.

Qualifications & Requirements

The ideal candidate is a highly self-motivated, enterprising musician with meticulous planning and administration skills. Experience in choral conducting, keyboard proficiency, vocal technique, music literacy, and working with children is essential. Knowledge of liturgical music is beneficial. The role requires travel across South London and Kent.

Additional Information

  • Reporting to: Director of Music and Diocesan Music Steering Group.
  • Hours: 14-35 hours per week (part-time candidates considered).
  • Salary: £30,000 per annum (pro-rata for reduced hours).
  • Contract: Fixed-term for two years, commencing September 2023.
  • Enhanced DBS disclosure required (regulated activity with children).
