Job summary

Pulmonary Hypertension Fellow
2 x Trust Fellow post in Pulmonary Hypertension

The Pulmonary Hypertension service at [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] is part of the cardiac unit and is the UK's national referral center for children with pulmonary hypertension. This post will give ample experience in the diagnosis, management and follow-up of children with pulmonary hypertension, including the introduction of new therapies. It will offer opportunities for clinical research as well as clinical experience in paediatric cardiology. Previous post holders have achieved National Training Numbers (NTN's) in paediatric cardiology, general cardiology fellow posts at [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal], additional cardiology sub-speciality fellow posts and post CCT fellows have gone on to become leads for pulmonary hypertension within other cardiac units. Pulmonary hypertension fellows will be responsible for the work-up and day to day management of new patients and the continuing care of current patients. Participation in out of hours care for general cardiology is according to experience and by mutual agreement. We are actively pursuing equal opportunities. We encourage applications from all sections of the community and overseas candidates with appropriate experience and registrations are encouraged to apply.

Main duties of the job

The Fellow will provide for the investigation and management, including the use of newer therapies, of all patients referred with chronic pulmonary hypertension. The majority of the work involves assessment and detailed investigation of the children (and their families), including echocardiographic studies (after suitable training, if required). There will be ample opportunity for clinical research.

The Fellow will liaise with other departments such as radiology and the catheter laboratory in the organisation of invasive procedures necessary for the investigation and treatment of these patients. They will work closely with the transplant team as some children may eventually require this form of treatment.

One outpatient session per week will be undertaken with the Consultant and the Fellow, who may accompany the Consultant to major regional centres. The Fellow will be responsible for supervising the management of the daycases as well as completing the medical discharge summaries. Medical cover and more direct participation in the long-term post operative management of patients undergoing heart and heart-lung transplantation may form a part of the on-call duties. The Fellow will work closely with the Nursing Liaison Teams, both at [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] and other centres sharing in the care of these children.
