Job Summary

Applications are invited for a Junior Clinical Fellow (F2-ST2 grade) to support commercial clinical trial delivery across the Cheshire and Merseyside region. The post holders will be based within the 26-bedded NIHR Clinical Research Facility in Royal Liverpool Hospitals site, but will work across the Trust on various different trials depending upon activity.

Main Duties of the Job

Experience or interest in commercial clinical studies would be desirable. The Clinical Research Facility is a 24/7 facility, equipped to deliver early phase clinical trials and support academic and translational studies. It is one of only 2 NHS CRF's in England to hold MHRA Phase I Accreditation.

Job Responsibilities

  • The post holder will be based initially in the Clinical Research Facility (CRF) but will need to work across the whole Trust wherever the clinical trials activity is taking place.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential:

  • MBBS or equivalent
  • Eligible for Full registration with the GMC at time of starting post
  • Satisfactory progress in Foundation Medicine Training (or equivalent evidence of competence) at the time of application
  • Advanced Life Support (ALS accreditation)

Desirable:

  • MRCP (or equivalent)

Experience

Essential:

  • Understands the basic principles of audit and research
  • Valid Good Clinical Practice (GCP certification) or willingness to obtain immediately on appointment
  • Understanding of basic principles of clinical trials, informed consent and research governance
  • Evidence of competencies achieved at Foundation Year 2 including participation in the acute take
  • Able to prioritise clinical need
  • Ability to assess, recognise and initiate management of acutely ill patients
  • Aware of own limitations, consults senior colleagues appropriately and knows when to ask for help
  • Maintains own clinical skills
  • Understands the principles of patient confidentiality and data protection
  • Understands the need for and appreciates the role of quality improvement
  • Understands the principles of clinical governance - ensures patients are not put at risk

Desirable:

  • Contributes to teaching and learning of others in the clinical setting
  • Participation in clinical research
  • Publications, abstracts, peer reviewed articles, book chapters
  • Demonstrates interest in clinical trials, ideally previous experience of involvement in clinical research
  • Experience working in specialties commonly involved in late stage trials (oncology, cardiology, respiratory medicine)
  • Attention to detail, ability to follow protocols accurately and maintain high quality documentation
  • Knowledge of UK Health systems, practices and values and awareness of current issues in the NHS
  • Computer literate
  • Understands the importance and impact of information systems in health care
  • Participation in audit and quality improvement
  • Experience of working in teams
  • Ability to practice evidence based medicine
  • Evidence of leadership qualities
