About the Role

We are looking for a Lecturer - Classical Conducting at [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal]. Our department offers a dynamic and comprehensive training environment for aspiring conductors. We provide specialised tuition in classical conducting to both undergraduate and postgraduate students, delivered through individual lessons and group workshops. Students engage in the design, development, and delivery of curriculum content related to classical conducting, ensemble direction, and orchestral leadership. The department emphasises inclusive and pedagogically sound teaching practices, supporting students across varied levels of experience. We have collaborated with the Orchestra of Opera North, to provide students with real-world conducting experience and exposure to professional orchestral settings. Please note that the total number of working hours for appointed staff will depend on teaching and assessment responsibilities and on student enrolment numbers.

What You Will Do

  • Provide specialist tuition in classical conducting to undergraduate and/or postgraduate students, through both individual lessons and group workshops.
  • Contribute to the curriculum design, development, and delivery in areas including classical conducting, ensemble direction, and orchestral leadership.
  • Support students’ artistic and professional growth by offering constructive feedback, pastoral support, and career guidance, in line with the Conservatoire’s educational ethos and values.
  • Deliver engaging, inclusive, and pedagogically sound teaching in classical conducting, supporting students with diverse levels of experience and backgrounds.
  • Supervise student ensembles where appropriate, facilitating the practical application of conducting techniques and encouraging the development of collaborative performance skills.

About You

  • Degree in related subject area and research experience and/or professional experience of conducting
  • Professional experience as a classical conductor (e.g. orchestras, ensembles)
  • Previous experience working with student ensembles in an educational context
  • Strong communication skills, with a proven ability to engage, motivate, and support students through clear and inclusive teaching
  • Be collaborative and willing to work with a team of managers and lecturers to deliver an excellent student experience and contribute to a thriving work environment.
