The Vacancy
[Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] Group is expanding our team of Specialist Workplace Needs Assessors and we are looking for an experienced professional with expertise in supporting individuals with Visual Impairments (VI) and Hearing Impairments (HI).
This is a rewarding role where you will use your specialist knowledge to identify barriers, recommend adjustments, and help clients thrive in safe, accessible, and inclusive workplaces.
As a Specialist Workplace Needs Assessor (VI & HI), you will carry out workplace assessments, identify functional barriers, and recommend both technological and non‑technological adjustments. You will produce high‑quality reports and action plans, ensuring employees and employers receive clear, practical guidance to improve workplace accessibility.
Salary negotiable depending on experience, Homebased with occasional travel
Key Accountabilities & Responsibilities
Knowledge & Understanding
- Strong understanding of different types of vision loss, including total blindness, peripheral loss, central loss, and low vision.
- Awareness of how sight loss can affect reading, mobility, computer use, and workplace tasks.
- Strong understanding of types of hearing loss, related challenges, and workplace considerations.
- Understanding of software accessibility features and compatibility for individuals with visual impairments.
- Knowledge of hearing aids, receivers, transmitters, and solutions that enhance auditory access across Phonak, Oticon, Signia, Austar, Starkey, and Widex devices.
Assessment Skills
- Ability to assess the built environment, considering lighting, glare, signage, navigation routes, and workspace adaptations for sight loss
- Ability to produce Specialist Workplace Needs Assessment Reports for both VI and HI.
Communication & Interpersonal Skills
- Strong person‑centred communication style and effective questioning techniques.
- Knowledge of appropriate etiquette for guiding individuals who are blind.
- Empathetic, a strong active listener, and solution‑focused.
- Excellent report writing and proofreading skills, including clear employer action plans.
- Understanding of non‑technology adjustments and practical workplace recommendations.
- Confident using Microsoft Teams, including accessibility features and screen‑sharing with visually impaired clients.
Assistive Technology Expertise (Essential)
You must have strong, practical knowledge of AT solutions, including:
Visual Impairment Technology
- Screen readers: JAWS, NVDA, VoiceOver
- Screen magnifiers: ZoomText, SuperNova, and native OS solutions
- Braille displays and notetakers
- Accessible mobile applications (e.g., Seeing AI, Be My Eyes)
- OCR tools such as KNFB Reader, Kurzweil
- Ergonomic equipment and headsets
- Mobile phone applications for VI
Hearing Impairment Technology
- In-depth understanding of hearing aids and accessory ecosystems
- Knowledge of assistive listening devices and workplace-compatible audio solutions
Skills, Experience & Qualifications
Desirable Skills & Knowledge
- Awareness of workplace accessibility standards, including WCAG digital accessibility guidelines, RNIB, RNID, HSE guidance, UK Equality Act 2010 and reasonable adjustments
- Experience providing Sighted Guide support during face-to-face assessments.
- Understanding of the Access to Work process, including applications, scope, and timelines.
- Screen reader training (CPD) or other relevant accessible technology training.
