Job Overview

This is a fast-paced environment where no two days are the same. As you gain experience in this role, we'll support you to grow and develop, with opportunities to gain qualifications and progress your career.

Main Duties

  • To care for residents entrusted with us at the centre, ensuring exceptional standards of safety, security, dignified care, and respect.
  • Support and encourage residents to engage in recreational activities, arts, crafts and other opportunities for cultural expression.
  • Carry out any necessary shift audits, administration, counts and searches of residents, reporting accurately as required in a timely manner on our systems.
  • Ensure the safe accommodation and detention of residents at the centre so they do not come to harm.
  • Pro-actively identify and support any resident suffering a deterioration in physical or mental health and wellbeing.

What we are looking for

Being a Detention Custody Officer demands emotional intelligence, patience, resilience and professionalism. You will need good communication skills to work together as part of a team. There may be occasions where you need to resolve conflict or prevent residents from harming themselves or others. Part time applications are also welcomed and can be considered.

Specific Requirements

  • You must be a British Citizen, EU citizen with settled status, or have an ILR (Indefinite Leave to Remain).
  • Bankruptcy history, CCJs, social media activity and criminal convictions will be checked.
  • You must have lived in the UK for the past three years with no significant footprint outside of the UK other than for normal holidays.
  • You will also be required to pass a basic Maths and English test, and a mobility test.

Due to the safety-critical nature of this role, we require that employees are not under the influence of any substance—including prescribed medication—that may impair their ability to perform their duties safely. This includes any THC-based prescriptions due to the lack of reliable evidence on safe levels of THC in the system.

If you are currently prescribed medication that may affect your ability to carry out safety-critical tasks, we encourage you to discuss this with us as part of the recruitment process. We are committed to making reasonable adjustments where appropriate and in line with our obligations under the Equality Act 2010.

To ensure the highest standards of safety and compliance, we operate a random drug and alcohol testing programme. By applying, you acknowledge that participation in this testing is a condition of employment.
