About the Role
[Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] is recruiting an Operating Unit Director to lead a major healthcare portfolio in London. This is a senior leadership role with full accountability for operational performance, commercial outcomes and people leadership across a high‑profile healthcare estate. Patient care is at the heart of everything this role does. The services delivered by this portfolio directly support safe, reliable, compassionate environments for patients, clinicians and healthcare colleagues. You will lead a large, complex portfolio with responsibility for strategy, growth, P&L, service quality, compliance and culture, operating within [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal]'s governance and delegation of authority. What you'll be responsible for
Strategic leadership
- Set and deliver a multi‑year healthcare strategy aligned to [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal]'s vision and [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] ambitions
- Identify and deliver growth opportunities across NHS and healthcare clients, including new business and contract expansion
- Build and lead a strong, future‑ready leadership team with clear succession and development plans
- Champion innovation, digital adoption and standardised operating models to improve quality, resilience and patient outcomes
- Represent [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] at senior healthcare forums and with key public‑sector stakeholders
Operational excellence
- Ensure safe, compliant and high‑quality service delivery across all healthcare contracts
- Maintain robust oversight of statutory, clinical, safeguarding and healthcare‑specific compliance
- Embed consistent operating models and best practice to improve reliability and reduce risk
- Drive continuous improvement across quality, safety, sustainability and patient experience
- Lead recovery and service improvement activity where required
People leadership
- Lead, develop and retain a high‑performing, inclusive leadership team
- Create a culture of collaboration, accountability and patient‑centred decision‑making
- Identify, coach and develop diverse high‑potential talent

Client and stakeholder management
- Act as executive sponsor for strategic healthcare clients
- Build trusted senior relationships with NHS leaders and system partners
- Ensure FM services directly support patient safety, clinical effectiveness and staff experience
- Drive high levels of customer satisfaction, retention and reputation
Commercial and financial accountability
- Hold full P&L accountability, delivering revenue, margin and cash targets
- Oversee pipeline management, bid governance and commercial risk
- Ensure compliance with delegation of authority and governance frameworks
- Balance commercial performance with value for money and patient‑focused outcomes
What we're looking for
- Senior leadership experience within public‑sector healthcare environments (for example NHS Trusts, ICBs or healthcare PFI)
- Proven track record of delivering safe, compliant, patient‑centric services at scale
- Strong commercial and financial acumen, with full P&L accountability
- Experience leading complex, regulated contracts with multiple stakeholders
- Ability to simplify complexity, standardise operations and drive continuous improvement
- Strong influencing and communication skills, credible at executive level
- Collaborative and values‑driven, with strong internal leadership capability
- Calm, credible and trusted by both frontline teams and senior healthcare stakeholders
- Proactive, resilient and comfortable operating at pace in complex environments
- High levels of integrity, accountability and energy
