Primary Design Engineer
[Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] is seeking an experienced Primary Design Engineer to support high-voltage renewables projects by producing primary electrical designs for substations up to 132kV. This hybrid role offers flexibility and the chance to work on major renewable energy and grid infrastructure projects across the UK.
- Location: Hybrid role with travel across the UK (London base)
- Employment: Full time, 40 hours per week

Role Responsibilities
- Produce primary electrical designs for substations, including AIS and GIS layouts up to 132kV, cable routes, LV layouts, switch rooms, control rooms and earthing systems
- Ensure all designs comply with relevant British and International Standards, DNO requirements, customer specifications and contractual obligations
- Design and analyse earthing systems for substations, renewables and grid connection projects, including EPR studies, touch and step voltage assessments and soil resistivity testing
- Prepare technical documentation including drawings, calculations, reports, major plant specifications and lightning protection assessments
- Manage and coordinate external design suppliers and collaborate with structural, planning and CAD teams to deliver integrated design solutions
Required Qualifications
- Degree, HND or HNC in Electrical Engineering (Power Systems preferred)
- Proven experience in primary electrical design for HV/EHV AC substations (11kV–132kV) and balance of plant projects
- Strong knowledge of industry standards such as BS7671, ENATS, NGTS, BS EN 61936‑1 and BS7354
- Experience working within consultancy, contractor or utility environments
