The Vacancy

[Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] ([Employer hidden — sign up to reveal]) is an internationally renowned research and development organisation. We are looking for an Advanced Research Engineer to join our Mechatronics and Machines Team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Largely independent delivery of larger project's technical deliverables
  • Acting as Technical Lead for smaller projects; ensuring work meets or exceeds agreed customer requirements, within agreed budgets and timescales.
  • Involvement in all aspects of project delivery including in-depth research, concept generation, detailed design, generation of technical drawings, ensuring compliance with all relevant standards, technical support of commissioning, awareness of project budget and deliverables.
  • Proactive approach in identification, technical specification, and delivery of new and novel technology capability into [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal], undertaking innovative Engineering research work focused primarily on technology/manufacturing readiness levels (TRL/MRL) 3+.

Essential Qualifications, Skills & Experience

  • Degree educated (BSc, BEng, MSc or MEng) in Mechanical Engineering or suitable Engineering discipline.
  • At least 5-10 years mechanical and/or manufacturing engineering experience, with specialisation in Machines or Automation.
  • Demonstrable experience of designing machinery, manufacturing equipment or products.
  • Industrial project delivery including in-depth research, concept generation, detailed design, compliance with standards, technical support of commissioning, working to budget and timelines.
  • Able to generate technical drawings in compliance with BS888 standard.
  • Working knowledge of materials, relevant directives, regulations and standards, mechanical principles, and manufacturing techniques.
  • Working knowledge of Siemens NX, Solidworks, or other CAD software package.
  • Working knowledge of sensors and instrumentation.
  • Working knowledge of data logging and analysis.
  • Ability to liaise with clients and industrial members, working with the team to budget and plan engineering projects.
  • Demonstrable knowledge of problem-solving tools and error-proofing techniques.
  • Best practice technical report and presentation writing skills.
  • Capable of identifying project and business risks.
  • Pragmatic hands-on experience with a problem-solving approach.

Desirable Skills/Qualifications

  • Awareness or working knowledge of electrical, electronic, pneumatic, or hydraulic components.
  • Experience or awareness of using PLC hardware, Arduino, or Raspberry Pi.
  • Experience in any relevant programming language.
  • Experience working with the Machinery Directive and CE/UKCA marking guidelines.
  • To have achieved or be in the process of achieving Chartered Engineer Status.
