Job Summary
This is a permanent post. However, the successful candidate will initially be employed on a 6-month fixed term contact basis, whilst being assessed against the required competencies pertaining to the ability to safely provide out-of-hours cover on our on-call rota (similar to the IAC/IAOC). The permanent contract will be subject to you achieving all competencies. Where these are not achieved the fixed term contract may be extended for a further duration.
This is a replacement post and we invite applications from enthusiastic anaesthetists to join our friendly and forward thinking team based at Leighton Hospital. Leighton Hospital is situated on the outskirts of Crewe in Cheshire. This location benefits from a great position in the Cheshire countryside, surrounded by green fields and close to many charming small towns and villages. The Peak District and North Wales are within easy reach, and there are also good transport connections to Manchester, Liverpool, Birmingham, and London. The Trust retained its 'Good' rating by the CQC in April 2020, has a good reputation for research and benefits from some of the very latest clinical facilities; these include Critical Care, neonatal intensive care, a suite of state-of-the-art theatres and a dedicated day case Treatment Centre. The Trust has invested significantly in recent years in clinical expansion.
Main Duties of the Job
A formal job plan review will be undertaken between the appointee and the Clinical Lead, three months after the commencement date of the appointment. This job plan will be agreed by the Associate Medical Director. The job plan will be reviewed at least annually by the Clinical Lead. The job plan will be a prospective agreement that sets out the Specialty Doctor's duties, responsibilities, and objectives for the coming year. It will cover all aspects of the Specialty Doctor's professional practice including clinical work, teaching, research, education and managerial responsibilities.
The posts would involve a period of induction, with the job plan for the first month based on the timetable shown below (this is illustrative and exact days may vary):
- Monday: AM SPA (1.0 PA), PM Theatre (0.25 PA)
- Tuesday: AM Theatre (1.25 PA), PM Theatre (1.25 PA) (1 in 4 weeks)
- Wednesday: AM Theatre (1.25 PA), PM Obstetric (1.25 PA)
- Thursday: AM Obstetric (1.25 PA), PM Critical care (1.25 PA)
- Friday: AM Critical care (1.25 PA), PM Critical care (1.25 PA)
The post is offered at 10 Programmed Activities, to increase to 12 PAs with on-call commitment after the induction period (or when completed assessments).

Person Specification
- Qualifications: MBBS or equivalent medical qualification
- Fitness to Practise: Full GMC Registration with a Licence to Practise; applicants knowledge is up to date and fit to practise safely
- Eligibility: Evidence of achievement of Foundation competencies (or equivalent) by time of appointment in line with GMC standards; evidence of CT3 competences (or equivalent) in anaesthesia
- Clinical Skills & Experience: Acute care safe: up-to-date ALS; clinical judgement; relevant specialty knowledge; practical skills; proven ability to work in different clinical settings. Desirable: APLS/EPALS, FRCA or Primary FRCA
- Specialty specific skills: At least 3 years' experience in anaesthesia; competent to work with distant supervision in emergency anaesthesia, critical care, and obstetric anaesthesia. Desirable: significant NHS experience
- Communication skills: Effective written/spoken communication, empathy, works in partnership with patients
- Personal Skills: Team working, managing others, coping with pressure, problem solving, organization, flexible approach, equality and diversity
- Clinical Governance & Quality Improvement: Clinical governance awareness, audit participation, teaching. Desirable: research skills
- Probity: Professional integrity and respect for others
- Commitment to ongoing professional development: Interest in specialty, commitment to appraisal, learning from feedback
