Job Summary

We have an exciting opportunity to join our Plastic Surgery service where you will be attached to various Consultant Plastic Surgeons for six-month periods in order to gain further training in the particular expertise of those consultants. The unit is a well-recognised centre for advanced training in Breast and Reconstructive Microsurgery, Hand and Complex Limb Trauma reconstruction, Burns acute management and late reconstruction, and Cleft surgery. St Andrews Centre is also a regional tertiary centre for Head and Neck cancer services for the Essex region. You would be expected to work as an integral part of a surgical team and would take on considerable responsibility for patients under the care of the Consultant for whom you are working. Your role provides the opportunity for plastic surgical trainees to gain further experience in Skin Cancer and you will also be involved in research and be encouraged to present and publish papers.

Main Duties of the Job

You will be involved in the management of melanoma and non-melanoma skin cancer with loco-regional and free flaps reconstruction, SNLB, regional lymph node dissection (neck, axilla and groin) and parotidectomy for parotid metastasis and you will also get involved in abdominal wall and perineal reconstruction. Your role includes exposure to acute and reconstructive Burn Care in a high-volume service. The unit offers plenty of opportunity for study and research. The trainees are benefitted by the structured weekly teaching programme supervised by the consultants. You will support the plastic surgical service at the St Andrew's Centre & satellite hospitals as required attending out-patient departments and the operating theatres as required by the consultants, deputising for the consultants in their absence at a level commensurate with your experience in plastic surgery. You will undertake at least one regular trauma session in the theatre at St Andrew's each week, be expected to involve themselves in an on-call rota which covers the management of Plastic, Hand and Burn patients admitted as emergencies in the manner normal to Plastic Surgical Units worldwide and be responsible for attending to the administrative matters associated with the above.
