This role involves undertaking fee-earning work, contributing to the department’s profitability, and meeting key performance targets. The successful candidate will manage wills, powers of attorney, trusts, probate, and tax advisory matters for private clients while developing their own caseload. Responsibilities also include business development through networking and seminars, maintaining high standards of client care, collaborating with other departments, and expanding specialist expertise, all in alignment with the firm’s Business Plan.

Key tasks, duties and quality standards

  • Assist the department in meeting fee earning targets by providing advice and assistance to clients of the Private Client department as well as other departments.
  • Conduct matters on behalf of clients.
  • Manage support services including supervision of administrative support.
  • Participate in marketing and networking activities.
  • Financial control with regard to cash-flow through collection of monies on account and billing procedures.
  • Participate fully in the activities of the Private Client department team.
  • Utilise the skills of any department Trainee Solicitor and assist with their training.
  • Assist during the absence of other fee earners.
  • Carry out work outside of normal hours when required.
  • Travel to client meetings both in and outside the UK when required.
  • Promote good file management.
  • Assist with formulating and advancing internal procedures.
  • Undertake other duties as required.
  • Achieve fees and time recording individual targets.
  • Ensure compliance with regulatory procedures.
  • Maintain professional knowledge base including attainment of annual CPD points.

Qualifications and personal qualities

Essential qualifications: A good honours degree followed by LPC, training contract and PSC; or a good honours degree followed by SQE and qualifying work experience; or a good honours degree with CILEX to Fellow level, LPC and PSC; and admitted by SRA as a solicitor.

  • Technical competence in chosen area of law and practice.
  • Achieves targets in chargeable hours, fees, recovery rate, lock-up and non-chargeable time for a Senior Associate Solicitor.
  • Developed client/referrer base.
  • Understands and undertakes proper referral of work.
  • Willingness to be involved in firm activities outside work.
  • Supervises junior staff when appropriate.
  • Involvement in practice development.
  • Well-developed interpersonal, social and communication skills.
  • Sound training.

Desirable knowledge, skills and competencies:

  • Prior knowledge of Practice Evolve or other office management systems.

Office location

65 Woodbridge Road, Guildford, Surrey GU1 4RD. This role will be based at the Guildford office, with travel to other office locations (Epsom, Leatherhead, Reigate, Wimbledon) as required.
