Accredited Counsellor

[Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] is seeking an Accredited Counsellor to work with the MET Police. This is a permanent role based in Sidcup and Lambeth, with travel across London. Salary: £40,000 per annum (pro rata for part-time). Full-time or part-time options available, Monday-Friday, minimum 3 days per week.

Role Summary

As part of our ongoing recruitment drive, we are currently recruiting for Accredited Counsellors to join our team working with the MET Police. You will provide confidential counselling and related proactive functions to staff and officers within a multi-specialist occupational health team, adhering to the BACP Framework of Ethical Practice and MPS policies.

Main Duties and Responsibilities

  • Conduct weekly psychological screening appointments with clients in vulnerable roles.
  • Facilitate support groups focused on various mental health topics (e.g., bereavement, substance misuse).
  • Provide crisis counselling on a case-by-case basis as specified by the Clinical Lead.
  • Deliver trauma interventions for major and critical incidents, working within [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] and MPS policy.
  • Manage own caseload, delivering short-term (up to 6 sessions) counselling for clients with personal or work-related issues.
  • Intermittent longer-term support to suspended officers.
  • Advise/support managers about counselling services and manage a duty mailbox for urgent assessments.
  • Conduct psychological risk assessments for referrals and act according to MPS risk management protocol.
  • Offer practical problem-solving guidance and signpost to external agencies or internal team.
  • Assess officers' needs, plan, monitor, and evaluate interventions using evidence-based practice.

Experience, Skills, and Knowledge Required

  • BACP Accreditation is essential (or equivalent: BABCP, BPS, COSCA, IACP, NCPS, UKCP).
  • Experience in substance misuse would be advantageous.
  • Evidence of psychological risk assessment and ability to work autonomously.
  • Experience delivering a brief counselling model.
  • Understanding of IAPT measurement forms.
  • Knowledge and understanding of clinical governance and risk management.
  • At least 3 years' experience in a counselling service, occupational health, or related service offering short-term solution-focused therapy.
  • CBT trained practitioners desirable but not essential.
  • Experience delivering trauma-focused counselling.
