About us:

[Employer hidden — sign up to reveal]’s Directorate of Estates & Facilities is responsible for managing and developing the university’s diverse estate across five central London campuses, sport grounds and residences. With more than 100 buildings ranging from historic 18th‑century landmarks to modern, purpose‑built facilities, the directorate ensures that [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] provides high‑quality, safe and accessible spaces for teaching, research, student life and community activity.

The Campus and Minor Projects (CMP) team delivers end‑to‑end management of small to medium‑sized projects, ensuring high‑quality improvements across the university’s estate.

About the role:

The postholder will act as a construction project management lead within the Campus Projects and Minor Works team, with responsibility for delivering a portfolio of small to medium‑scale and strategic construction and minor works projects across the University estate.

The role is firmly delivery‑focused, requiring strong, hands‑on construction project management expertise to ensure projects are delivered professionally, are technically robust, and fully compliant with the University’s procurement, financial and Health & Safety requirements, alongside relevant statutory and regulatory standards.

The postholder will act as a key construction liaison across the campus, working closely with internal stakeholders, consultants and contractors to ensure effective coordination and delivery of works, while embedding the Fit for [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] culture consistently across project sites.

In addition to managing a portfolio of construction projects, the postholder will line manage and support 2 Assistant Project Managers. They will take direct responsibility for delivering more complex and challenging construction projects, using these as opportunities to mentor and develop the technical capability, confidence and professional judgement of more junior team members.

This is a full‑time or part‑time post (35 hours per week), and the successful candidate will be offered an indefinite contract.

About you:

To be successful in this role, we are looking for candidates to have the following skills and experience:

Essential criteria

  • Degree or postgraduate qualification in a relevant field (e.g., Construction Management, Architecture, Building Surveying, Engineering) or equivalent demonstrable experience in construction project delivery.
  • Strong practical knowledge of construction legislation and Health & Safety requirements, including BSA 2022 (HRB), Building Regulations, and CDM 2015.
  • IOSH, NEBOSH or an equivalent industry‑recognised Health & Safety qualification.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey technical information clearly to both technical and non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to develop detailed scopes of work based on personal technical knowledge and site experience, without relying heavily on external consultants.
  • Significant hands‑on experience delivering construction, refurbishment, fit‑out and minor works projects, with strong understanding of site logistics, sequencing, procurement and tender processes.
  • Experience working within Higher Education or similarly complex stakeholder environments, demonstrating an ability to manage competing priorities in a customer‑focused setting.
  • Experience of people‑management, including the ability to motivate, mentor and guide direct report by setting clear objectives, and maintain high professional standards.

Desirable criteria

  • Membership of a relevant professional body, such as RICS, ARB, RIBA or APM.
  • Able to remain calm, composed and unflustered when working in high‑pressure or fast‑paced situations.
  • Practical experience delivering construction projects within scientific and laboratory research environments.
  • High level of digital competency, including proficiency with Microsoft 365 (Office applications, Lists, Forms), SharePoint, Power BI and CAD software.

Application instructions:

We ask all candidates to submit a copy of their CV, and a supporting statement, detailing how they meet the essential criteria listed in the person specification section of the job description. If we receive a strong field of candidates, we may use the desirable criteria to choose our final shortlist, so please include your evidence against these where possible.
