[Employer hidden — sign up to reveal]’s Finance Department is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented individual to join our exceptional Credit Control team as a Senior Credit Controller. As part of the Finance, Procurement, Strategic Planning and Analytics Directorate (FPSPA), the Credit Control team manages the invoicing and collection of over £750 million annually in tuition, residence, and commercial income from students, sponsors, embassies, the Student Loan Company, and other customers. About the role
In this pivotal role, you will work closely with the Section Supervisor and wider team to manage the university’s debt in line with the university’s credit policy. Key responsibilities include:
- Debt Recovery and Reporting: Recovery of outstanding university fee balances, monitoring overdue accounts, engaging with parties, producing accurate reports for management.
- Customer Service Management: Overseeing high volumes of inbound communications (emails, phone calls), ensuring compliance with SLAs.
- Proactive Communication: Engaging with individuals and third parties regarding outstanding fees, resolving issues promptly.
- Collaboration and Query Resolution: Working with internal departments, external stakeholders, and legal representatives to resolve complex fee-related queries.
- Payment Arrangements: Evaluating requests for payment extensions or instalment plans, monitoring adherence.
- Escalation and Recommendation: Advising senior staff on next steps for unresolved accounts, recommending escalation actions.
- Team Performance and Objectives: Collaborating to achieve individual and team targets.
- Process Improvement: Identifying opportunities for improvement, leading short-term projects.
- Documentation and Review: Maintaining accurate documentation of processes and system configurations.
- Analytical and Escalation Handling: Strong analytical abilities to evaluate processes, handle complex issues.
- Overpayment Processing: Managing accurate processing of overpayments in line with policies and regulatory requirements.
During off-peak periods, the role holder may support the RMID team across Pre-Award, Post-Award and Credit Control activities.
About you
Essential criteria:
- 1. Relevant qualification or experience (degree or recognised financial qualification e.g., CICM, AAT, ACCA) or equivalent practical experience in finance/credit control.
- 2. Minimum 12 months’ experience handling complex debt-related queries within strict deadlines.
- 3. Proven success in high-volume debt collection with effective recovery strategies.
- 4. Strong organisational & time management skills – ability to prioritise, handle tight deadlines, high volumes of inquiries.
- 5. Numeracy & advanced IT skills – high numerical accuracy, confident using Excel (pivot tables, VLOOKUP, data analysis tools).
- 6. Attention to detail and professionalism.
- 7. Effective communication and autonomy – able to work independently and communicate clearly.
- 8. Solution-focused and improvement-minded – commitment to continuous improvement.
Desirable criteria:
- 1. Higher education experience – knowledge of tuition fee structures, academic cycles.
- 2. Student and finance systems – familiarity with SITS or SAM, Unit4 ERP (Agresso).
- 3. Financial compliance knowledge – anti-fraud regulations, Money Laundering, Proceeds of Crime Act.
- 4. Data protection awareness – GDPR and data protection principles.
