Job summary
An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Clinical Psychologist to join the successful [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] Community Stroke Team (CST). The post involves working as part of a multidisciplinary community stroke team providing rehabilitation up to twelve months post stroke within patient's homes. You will take the lead in the provision of psychological care to stroke patients.
As a valued member of the MDT, you will provide consultation, training and supervision to staff on patients' psychological/neuropsychological care, including Level 2 supervision in line with national guidelines. You will provide line management and supervision of colleagues in Clinical Psychology as required. You will work with the senior leadership team in enhancing psychological understanding to support the wider system, including supporting stepped care models for mood and cognition. Your supervision will be provided by the Clinical Lead for Neuropsychology (member of the SRCN).
The role is permanent, 0.6 wte 8b, it may also be offered as a secondment. You will have substantive post qualification experience working with patients with neurological conditions. You will have completed or be enrolled on the knowledge component of the Qualification in Clinical Neuropsychology as recognised by the Division of Neuropsychology, BPS. Applications from suitably qualified and experienced Counselling Psychologists will be considered.
Main duties of the job
- Responsible for development and delivery of a high quality, specialist Clinical Psychology service for adults up to 12 months post stroke within their home environment.
- Providing specialist neuropsychological assessment and therapeutic service including cognitive rehabilitation and improving coping and adjustment to living with neurological impairment.
- Designing and implementing care pathways and protocols to assess and manage mood and cognition difficulties in accordance with national guidance.
- Liaising with associated hospital stroke wards and colleagues in Primary Care.
- Supporting the CST team with advice, consultation, training and supervision regarding neuropsychological assessment and management of stroke.
- Engaging with appropriate CPD and networking to ensure best practice.
You must be a HCPC registered Clinical Psychologist and have substantive post qualification experience of working with people with neurological conditions. You will have completed or be enrolled on the knowledge component of the QiCN as approved by the Division of Neuropsychology. You must have excellent communication skills and the ability to build strong working relationships with a range of professionals, patients, and families.

Job responsibilities
To deliver a specialist clinical psychology service within the [Employer hidden — sign up to reveal] Community Stroke Team. To offer highly specialised neuropsychological assessment and evidence-based interventions as required (face to face and by telephone/video) to adults within the first 12 months post stroke living with the cognitive, emotional and behavioural consequences of stroke. To offer risk management and assessment of mental capacity.
To support the Community Stroke Team with psychological aspects of their work with patients and families/carers, offering consultation, teaching, training, reflective practice and joint working to support rehabilitation of the individual as appropriate. Develop care pathways and protocols for the assessment and treatment of cognition and mood related to stroke and implement within the service using a stepped care model. To contribute to audit and evaluation on the effectiveness of the CST including psychology. To offer opportunities to Clinical Psychology Doctorate Trainees and other aspiring Clinical Psychologists from local courses, as appropriate. Support, supervise and line manage psychology staff as appropriate. To be a teaching and training resource to local Clinical Psychology Training programmes, and other training events as required.
Person Specification
- Qualifications & professional membership (Essential): BPS accredited Doctoral Level training qualification in Clinical Psychology; Eligible for Chartered status of the BPS; HCPC Registered as a Practitioner Psychologist (Clinical Psychologist); Completion of a supervision qualification; Completion of or current enrolment on Postdoctoral training in Clinical Neuropsychology.
- Experience (Essential): Substantive post qualification experience in clinical neuropsychology and neurorehabilitation; Experience in a multidisciplinary team; Experience with neuropsychological assessments and interventions; Teaching and training experience; Supervision and consultation experience.
- Knowledge (Essential): Advanced knowledge of psychological issues in stroke rehabilitation and national guidelines; Research and service evaluation skills; Commitment to maintaining clinical skills.
- Skills (Essential): Empathy and professionalism in communication; Ability to communicate with clients with cognitive/communication difficulties; Relating well to other professional groups.
- Contractual requirements: Full UK driving licence and vehicle for business use; Ability to travel to patient homes and between sites; Ability to work from home confidentially when required.
