Practice Nurse

This part-time, permanent role involves chronic disease management, cytology, immunisations, wound care, and other nursing duties. The successful candidate will enjoy an excellent salary commensurate with experience and access to the NHS Pension Scheme.

Main duties of the job

The main duties include chronic disease management clinics (diabetes, asthma, COPD, hypertension), health checks and screening (cytology), immunisations, wound care, travel immunisations, and all tasks related to being a Practice Nurse. The post-holder will work as part of the primary healthcare team providing Personal Medical Services.

Job responsibilities

  • Assist in routine patient care tasks as directed by GPs, including BP checks, NHS Health checks, new patient medicals, prescribed injections, BMI and lifestyle advice
  • Perform cytology, wound care (including Doppler), suture removal, travel clinic, ECGs, asthma/peak flow/spirometry, venepuncture, hypertension management, ear syringing
  • Administer immunisations under patient group directives, provide contraception advice and sexual health guidance, assist with minor surgery, coil fittings, implants
  • Request pathology tests, manage long-term conditions (diabetes, CHD, COPD), recognise and manage anaphylaxis, perform CPR and use AED
  • Maintain infection control, vaccine storage, stock management, and accurate clinical records
  • Participate in clinical meetings, mandatory training, and adhere to practice policies and confidentiality

Person Specification

Experience

  • Essential: 2 years post registration, Travel Immunisation, Childhood Immunisation, Asthma Management, Chronic Disease Management
  • Desirable: Diabetes Management, COPD, EMIS WEB system, Community Nursing, INR Experience

Knowledge

  • Essential: Knowledge of UKCC professional Code/Standards, Clinical Governance, Risk Assessment
  • Desirable: Recent update in relevant primary care setting

Skills/Aptitudes

  • Essential: Competent in basic nursing duties, ability to communicate verbally and in writing, computer literate
  • Desirable: Ability to undertake clinical audit, conduct computer searches

Qualifications

  • Essential: RGN, Family Planning Certificate, recognised qualification to diploma level or above
  • Desirable: Diabetes qualification, Asthma qualification, COPD, Teaching qualification
