Job Summary
Applications are invited for a Consultant Ophthalmologist with a subspecialty interest in Glaucoma. The post is 10 Programmed Activities per week, primarily based at Leighton Hospital, Crewe, with some sessions at Victoria Infirmary, Northwich. The post holder will also contribute to general ophthalmology clinics, participate in the emergency on-call rota, and engage in teaching, audit, governance, and service development. The Consultant will work collaboratively to promote a positive multidisciplinary culture and support workforce development. The successful applicant must have full registration with the GMC and continue to hold a Licence to Practise. The applicant must also be on the Specialist Register or be within six months of obtaining their Certificate of Completion of Training. Main Duties of the Job
The Consultant will lead the Glaucoma service, providing expert assessment, medical, laser, and surgical management, including trabeculectomy and glaucoma drainage device procedures. They will maintain responsibility for patients, manage complex cases autonomously, and supervise Specialist Glaucoma practitioners. Leadership duties include reviewing pathways, addressing delays, and supporting elective recovery, ensuring high-quality outpatient and surgical care.

Person Specification – Qualifications
- Essential: Full GMC Registration with license to practice; MBBS and FRCophth or equivalent; Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT (proposed CCT date within 6 months of interview), CESR, or European Community Rights.
- Desirable: PhD, MD or higher degree.
Person Specification – Experience
- Essential: Clinical training and breadth of experience equivalent to UK CCT Ophthalmology; Extensive experience in management of ophthalmology conditions with a subspeciality interest and training in Glaucoma (e.g., ASTO/TSC training); Ability to offer expert clinical opinion and management on a wide range of problems, both emergency and elective, within the subspecialty and general ophthalmology at consultant level, including medical, laser and surgical management of patients with Glaucoma; Ability to take full and independent responsibility for the clinical care of patients.
- Desirable: Recognised fellowship training in Glaucoma.

- Essential: Proven ability to conduct clinical and operative ophthalmology in all areas of the specialty; Commitment to effective departmental management; Able to demonstrate a broad awareness of service management issues; Demonstrates awareness of skills required for effective change processes; Demonstrates ability to lead a team by positive example and effective organisational skill.
- Desirable: Understanding of business planning and contracting; Proven experience in leading / facilitating a change of process.
